The power of total clarity.
What would your life look like?
If you had zero doubt about your path.
In total clarity.
About what to do next.
Most challenges in our life can be solved.
Or at least greatly attenuated by having total clarity.
When you know who you are.
Know what you want.
And know where you're heading.
Everything else becomes so much simpler.
When you know with total clarity that smoking a cigarette is shortening the time you will have with your loved ones,
You will have motivation to quit.
When you know with total clarity that if you don't record your album in the next three years,
You will end up never doing it.
You will feel an urge to take action.
When you know with total clarity that you are not happy in your marriage or in your job.
You are filled with the courage to move on.
Embrace the unknown.
And live more authentically.
When you know with total clarity that you need to set boundaries and fight back against a situation that is unfair.
You gain strength to do what you need to do.
When you're deciding between two options,
One strongly linked with your deeper values and the other not.
Total Clarity makes the right option so overwhelmingly more attractive.
That temptations and distractions tend to lose power.
Total clarity thus brings motivation,
Consistency,
Resilience.
And focus.
What is total clarity?
How many times have you heard from others?
Or perhaps even told yourself.
I know I need to do X,
But I end up doing Y.
You may think that what you need here is more strength.
And that's partially true.
But the deeper truth is that what you really need is more clarity.
Clarity will bring you the strength you lack.
Total clarity brings total strength.
Total clarity is not just to know.
It's not just an intellectual understanding of what's the right thing to do.
No,
That won't give you strength,
It won't move the needle much for you.
Because it's all in the mind.
It can easily be shaken off by a new opinion,
New data,
Or a new temptation.
Total clarity is when you know.
With your whole being and without a shadow of doubt.
What you want and what must be done.
It's not just a concept.
But a whole body experience.
Where your thoughts,
Your emotions,
Your energy,
And your will are all pointing to the same direction.
There is unassailable certainty.
This is different from intellectual knowing.
You can know what you need to do.
And still ignore that signal.
Finding yourself doing the exact opposite.
Because it's easier.
Because it speaks louder.
Or because it's an old habit.
But you cannot have true total clarity.
And still act against.
Total clarity is an overwhelming force that strips you off your illusions,
Distractions,
And weaknesses.
We all have seen that scene in the movies where a weaker opponent defeats a more powerful opponent.
By creating doubts in his or her mind.
For example,
In the dark night.
The Joker constantly tries to erode Batman's clarity of mission,
Suggesting that Gotham doesn't deserve saving and that Batman is just as corrupt as the criminals he fights.
Batman's power falters whenever he internalized those doubts.
He hesitates.
Loses his moral footing.
And the Joker gains ground.
The same happens in our lives.
The moment the slightest doubt takes us over.
We lose total clarity.
And the power that comes from it.
In summary,
You know you have total clarity when your certainty is unshakable.
You have no doubts.
You're not constantly reconsidering it.
And you feel the energy to act on your beliefs.
If there is trust,
No proof is necessary.
If there is no trust.
No proof is possible.
Chinese proverb.
How to find total clarity.
Unlike many people think.
Total clarity is not necessarily something you find at the end of a long process of intellectual analysis.
In fact,
In most cases,
Gathering more options,
Data points,
And perspectives leads to weaker decisions,
Not stronger ones.
In the book Blink,
Author Malcolm Gladwell presents many case studies demonstrating this point.
For example,
He mentions a study in the Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
Doctors who used long checklists,
Patient histories,
And multiple tests to diagnose heart attacks produced less accurate diagnosis,
As they were overwhelmed by irrelevant details.
Instead,
Using a simple decision rule.
Such as focusing on just three key variables.
Produced far more accurate diagnosis.
Likewise,
In Paradox of Choice,
Psychologist Barry Schwartz makes a similar point.
Many options and excessive information leads to poorer decisions.
This matches what I have observed in my own life.
And in that of hundreds of coaching clients I've worked with.
More data equals more confusion.
We think that by gathering more options and considering more perspectives,
We will come to a stronger conclusion.
To greater clarity.
But if we are self-aware enough.
We soon realize that the outputs of this cerebral gymnastics are confusion,
Overthinking,
And analysis paralysis.
So,
Quite the opposite from total clarity.
I'm not saying that data is useless and should be ignored.
What I am saying is that it often hurts clarity rather than leads to it.
Especially when we over-rely on data at the expense of connecting to our emotions,
Intuition,
And car drives.
If your clarity is based on analysis.
Then it's only an intellectual conclusion.
Not the whole being clarity.
That we are seeking.
Besides,
If your clarity is based on analysis,
It can always be shaken off by new data,
New thoughts,
New considerations.
That is why our minds often reanalyze the same ideas again and again,
Getting to the same conclusions.
But still not being satisfied.
Because we are not deriving any power from such conclusions.
So if total clarity in our lives is not found by analysis and overthinking.
How do we find it?
By going within.
So we can get in touch with our intuition,
Our feelings,
Our core values.
By slowing down so we can allow what is ephemeral to pass and what is important to shine forth.
By emptying our mind.
Creating time without any new inputs to process.
So that we can have space to connect the dots.
Using powerful questions,
Self-reflection,
And journaling.
Can also help us get to total clarity.
Provided that they are not feeding overthinking.
But serving as aids to help us get in touch with deeper layers of our being.
The path to arriving at total clarity is not linear,
But circular.
Not sequential,
But iterative.
Most people lose patience with it.
Feel lazy about the process.
And settle for the first breadcrumbs of clarity they find.
Only to later realize that they are lacking in focus,
Motivation,
And strength.
The process of finding total clarity can be slow.
But it's always worth it.
The certainty that it brings is not only empowering.
But also deeply peaceful.
With total clarity Our mind is finally resting on a foundation that is stable.
Reliable.
And still.
It no longer hesitates.
Finally,
It's worth mentioning that total clarity is not always something that passively dawns on us as a result of quiet contemplation.
At times all we get is a ninkling of a truth that may not be very strong or fully fleshed out.
But is very real.
And very alive.
Then we can make a conscious decision to embrace that as the seed of total clarity.
And be committed to staying in the process.
And seeing it unfold.
Parting thoughts.
Having total clarity is not a panacea for all challenges of life.
But it is a powerful element that is often missing.
And often underestimated.
The challenge is that our modern life is increasingly keeping us busy at the surface,
With information and dopamine buttons,
Thus taking us away from the inner environment that can be a fertile ground for total clarity.
Then we find ourselves in a vicious circle.
Being busy with a flurry of information prevents us from gaining total clarity.
Without total clarity,
We are not focused on the things that matter most.
Without such focus,
We are more vulnerable to the addictive nature of digital media,
Overthinking,
And endless options.
To break that cycle.
You need to be willing to sacrifice information for contemplation.
Busyness for stillness.
Desires for aspirations.
The questions of your mind.
For the certainties of your heart.
When you do that,
You will stop living life on the surface.
Initially that will leave you empty,
In a limbo state.
As you proceed.
Trusting the process.
You will find yourself living a much deeper life.
And being guided by total clarity at every step of the way.
