How to Set Goals
by Lou Redmond
This short talk provides insight on setting goals from a place of wholeness. Its aim is to help you be inspired to take on the New Year.
Transcript
The New Year's is here,
Which brings up the lovely topic of everyone's insecurities.
Maybe you've been feeling it.
Insecurities about what you haven't accomplished,
Insecurities about how much weight you've gained,
Insecurities about overall where you should be in your life.
And from the media and from society's message of you are not enough,
You haven't accomplished enough,
You're not good looking enough,
You're not successful enough,
You are then prompted to set goals and New Year's resolutions.
And the problem with this is not the goals,
But the place where you're coming from when you set them.
And that is a place of lack,
Of saying I am not enough as I am,
So I need to accomplish X in order to feel like enough,
In order to feel okay,
To feel worthy,
To feel accepted.
And what happens when you set goals from this place of lack is that the message you are sending to the universe is one of want and one of need.
And since the universe responds to who you are being,
You will continue to receive this feeling of wanting and needing.
And even if you were to hit a goal,
You will still feel this discontentment and this need and this lack to still want to do more.
So what are you saying,
Do I not set goals?
What I'm saying is that you change the process from outside in to inside out.
The goal is then to first realize that you don't have anything to prove to anyone.
You realize that you are this miracle that is being a human being on planet earth and the sheer miniscule chance that that is even true is more than enough to prove how worthy you really are.
When you really sit with that,
Then you can start asking a different question.
You then start to set goals not from a place of wanting and needing,
But from a place of growth.
You ask what dreams and what goals do I have inside of me that I want to express out into the world?
And you ask not what do I need to do to achieve those goals,
But who do I need to become?
What do I need to create from within me in order to realize these dreams and to realize these goals?
And that is how you become inspired.
And inspiration is what helps you to persist through the tough times when motivation is just not there.
Inspiration is how you create your dream life rather than trying to plan it.
So the goal is now is we need to get inspired.
We need to get to a place of wholeness.
And since you're listening to this on Insight Timer,
There is no better platform to find a place of wholeness than through some of these meditations that are on here.
And I've actually created a meditation that is for this exact topic of remembering that you are enough,
Remembering that you are worthy.
So if you look through any of my meditations,
One of them is called a 10-minute reminder of you are enough.
And a lot of my meditations are aimed to help you feel that sense of empowerment,
That sense of purpose.
That's really what my goal is on this platform.
Some people say my meditations are similar to talks,
Which is why I actually wanted to try out a talk here for a change.
So please,
I'd love to hear your comments,
I'm open to any feedback.
And I wish you an inspired and an empowered 2018.
Namaste,
My friends.

Thanks. My motivation to continue with my studies has started to wane as my study time has reduced and been pushed to later and later in the day. I just can’t find the energy to sit down and study after working all day. This talk has reminded me that my goal originates from inspiration not from need and incompleteness. I have discovered your 21 day course on goal setting and I feel I will benefit from it so I’m going to give it a shot. Thank you for putting in the work to provide these aids. I appreciate your time and effort.

So true about our goals that most of them come from the feeling that we are not enough. This topic is so important.

You speak to my heart. So needed in a time of crisis and uncertainty after losing my job due to the Covid crisis. Moving on from a centered loving place is what I need to be reminded of. Trusting myself.

Such a beautiful, inspiring way to approach goal setting... especially if one is more interested in a spiritual path versus “climbing the corporate/social ladder”. Thank you for your wise insight 🙏

I really liked this! 💗Please do more short talks or meditations like this! You’re one of my favorites on Insight Timer but I don’t usually have the time for your lengthier meditations. Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us. Happy New Year! 😊

A very pleasant and comforting , as well as inspiring, talk. I Like the part about not setting intentions from a place of need and unhappiness. This makes sense to me. Suggest the " 2018" be dubbed over to say 2020 or be left out for a more general New Year's message.
