Tonight, we turn to the teaching of Deuteronomy 24: when gathering harvest, do not reap to the edges or return for what was dropped—leave gleanings for the poor, the stranger, the widow, and the orphan. This command asks us to shift from wants to needs. Our desire is often to take everything, to cling, to secure. But Scripture reminds us: you do not need it all. Leave space. Trust that enough remains. As you breathe, notice what you grasp for, what you think you must have. With each exhale, let one want fall away. Feel into what is truly necessary—food, shelter, care, connection, breath. Notice how sufficiency feels different from scarcity. Like a field with gleanings left behind, you remain full, yet generous. In this balance, we discover freedom: to need less, to share more, to live in trust.

We're just going to kind of reflect and draw from what we need to what we want.

We'll start with a bell.

Start by stretching or yawning or just taking a deep inhale,

Slow exhale.

Finding ways to slow yourself down.

Become a little more quiet and a little more still.

Not perfectly still,

Not silent,

Just a little more each time.

Getting heavy,

Letting yourself be tired,

Letting yourself be a little bored.

It's nice to be seated with your hands and feet uncrossed,

Your shoulders soft,

Your face somewhat passive or emotionless.

Getting heavy,

Just falling into all of this with nothing else to do.

You're going to get distracted,

That's the nature of the brain,

Functioning and alive.

So you just keep coming back.

You can listen to my voice,

You can follow your breath,

You can notice your body as ways to return.

Little cues to remind you.

That you're here,

That you're meditating,

That you don't have to get lost in a fantasy or an anxiety or a euphoric recall.

Just being.

Slowing down and getting steady.

Deeper inhale,

Slower exhale.

Body heavy,

Mind light.

In your mind's eye,

You might cast a generous awareness around your body,

From your toes to your fingers,

From your head to your bottom.

What's stiff,

What's sore,

What's happy and relaxed?

What needs your attention and what's doing just fine without your attention right now?

Breathing into any tender spots.

Letting yourself be.

Just being okay with where you are and who you are right now.

What do you need?

What do you really need in life?

To breathe,

To eat,

To drink,

To sleep.

To rest and have shelter.

To care for others and be cared for.

Sit in that thought of what do you need?

What's really important?

What matters?

What couldn't you live without?

What do you want that goes beyond that?

A yacht?

Wealth and fame?

Power?

Sexiness?

A name in lights?

The fanciest new phone?

The best guitar?

The fastest car?

What do you want?

Drives you?

You lust after it?

Trips you up?

It's okay to want.

Just notice that grandiose vision.

What do you want?

Feel yourself grasping for it.

Do you like that feeling?

Is it comfortable?

Is it interesting?

Is it confusing?

Disorienting?

Where do you notice wanting things?

Striving?

Acquiring?

What's that about?

And then go back to what you need.

Sense of purpose,

Connection,

Love,

Warmth,

Dryness.

Something to drink,

Something to eat.

Clothing and shelter.

What do you need?

What is required for you to breathe and be safely?

Where do you feel those things,

Those needs?

When you reflect on those more essential qualities,

Where do you see it,

Notice it,

Feel it in your body?

Do you slow down?

Do you speed up?

Do you get tight or relaxed?

Just what you need,

Not what you want.

Where does that sit?

When you think about what you want,

Does it feel good?

When you grasp after a shiny new guitar.

Or speedboat.

Or a fancy leather jacket.

Things that go beyond what you need to what you want,

Desire,

Or lust for.

The kind of lusts that get you in trouble.

Where do you feel those things?

Does it feel good?

Does it feel awkward?

Maybe you feel indifferent.

How much do you want to want things?

Notice it in your body.

There's no right answer.

And one more time,

Just come back to what you need.

What do you gotta have?

To breathe,

To be safe,

To be healthy.

To be well-rested and well-fed.

What do you need?

What's really required there?

Not too much food.

Not too much exercise.

Just what you need.

Just right.

That sense of connection with self.

Attuned.

What would that be like?

To just do what you need,

Not grasp for what you want.

See how that sits with you.

Just breathe it in.

Maybe you breathe in deeply with what you need and exhale slowly with what you want.

Just to separate those two experiences a little.

Need and want.

Need and want.

Not the same.

Just continuing to breathe until you hear the closing bell.
