The Cost Of Holding Everything Together
by Debra Ford
There’s a quiet pressure many people carry— to keep everything steady, organized, and under control. Over time, that pressure can become exhausting. In this reflection, we explore the Tao perspective on control, tension, and the unseen weight of trying to hold life in place. A gentle invitation to consider: What might you be holding… that doesn’t need to be held so tightly?

Hello friend.
You know,
Over the years of both studying and teaching the Tao,
I've noticed something that comes up for many people.
I was thinking about this earlier as I was tidying up the living room.
Just small,
Everyday things,
Keeping everything in order.
And it connects to something deeper,
You know.
Many people are carrying more than they realize.
Many of us are carrying much more than we realize.
It's not just the responsibilities,
No.
But it's the pressure to keep everything steady,
To keep everything organized,
To keep everything under control.
It's exhausting,
Right?
It creates a kind of quiet tension.
From the outside,
Things may look fine.
I may have a beautifully tidy living room today.
But inside,
It can feel exhausting.
You know,
From a Tao perspective,
This often comes from trying to hold life in place,
From trying to keep it under control.
And that's instead of allowing it to move.
Because life is always changing,
Isn't it?
Life is always shifting.
And when we try to control all of it,
We end up holding a weight that was never ours to carry,
Holding that weight.
So sometimes the question isn't,
How do I manage all of this?
But rather,
What can I let move?
What can I let move without me holding it so tightly?
And even a small release can create a surprising amount of ease.
Just something to notice on your own,
In your day,
In your own way.
So,
From me and Kasper,
With love,
Friend.
