Yoga Nidra For Deep Sleep

With Ananya Iyer

When sleep becomes something you feel you must achieve, bedtime can quickly turn into another place of effort, monitoring, and frustration. Yoga Nidra for Deep Sleep offers a gentler approach. Across five progressive lessons, Ananya will guide you through the foundations of Yoga Nidra for sleep: releasing the pressure to fall asleep, moving attention out of mental story and into the body, allowing the breath to breathe itself, and learning to leave thoughts unfinished until morning. Each lesson combines clear teaching with a guided Yoga Nidra experience, helping you understand not only what to practice, but why it may support deeper rest. You will learn how to reduce the pressure to make sleep happen, use body awareness to quiet mental activity, follow the natural breath without controlling it, notice thoughts without becoming absorbed in them, build a simple nighttime Yoga Nidra ritual, and develop a more trusting relationship with rest. You do not need any previous experience with Yoga Nidra. You may remain awake, drift in and out, or fall asleep during the practices. There is no perfect way to experience them. By the end of the course, you will have a complete bedtime practice you can return to whenever your body feels tired but your mind remains active. Sleep is not a performance. Rest begins when trying begins to soften. Please note: As this practice is designed for deep sleep, please do not listen while driving or operating heavy machinery.

Meet your Teacher

Ananya Iyer is a warm and grounded Yoga Nidra teacher who helps listeners move out of mental effort and into deeper rest. Her teaching blends authentic Yoga Nidra, nervous-system awareness, sleep science, body-based relaxation and gentle Indian contemplative wisdom. Ananya’s approach is especially supportive for people who feel physically tired yet mentally alert, carry stress into the night, or find themselves trying too hard to relax or fall asleep. Rather than treating Yoga Nidra as only a sleep meditation, she teaches it as a systematic practice of deep rest and self-awareness. Her courses help listeners understand why rest can feel difficult, how attention can be guided away from overthinking, and how the body and mind may begin to settle when they are no longer being asked to perform. Her central teaching is simple: You do not have to force yourself to relax. When the body feels supported and the mind has less to manage, rest can begin to arise naturally.

Lesson 1

Rest Begins Before Sleep

Stop Trying to Make Sleep Happen. The pressure to fall asleep can quietly keep the mind alert. In this first lesson, you’ll learn why trying harder often makes sleep feel more distant and how Yoga Nidra offers a gentler approach. Through awareness of support and the natural breath, you’ll begin shifting from monitoring sleep to simply receiving rest. Day 1 Integration Practice: Before bed, dim the lights and place your phone aside. As you settle down, quietly remind yourself: “I do not need to make sleep happen. I am here to rest.”

Lesson 2

The Body As A Doorway to Sleep

Move From Mental Story Into Physical Sensation. At night, the body may be still while attention remains caught in thoughts about the past, the future or whether sleep is arriving. In this lesson, you’ll learn how the Yoga Nidra practice of rotation of consciousness guides attention gently through the body. Rather than trying to stop thinking or force relaxation, you’ll give the mind something simple and steady to follow - creating the conditions for deeper rest. Day 2 Integration Practice: Once today, pause and silently notice: - Feet touching the floor. - Body touching the chair. - Hands resting. Do not try to relax. Simply move from thought into physical sensation.

Lesson 3

Let The Breath Breathe Itself

Trust the Rhythm That Is Already Carrying You. At bedtime, even the breath can become something we try to control. We make it deeper, slower or calmer, hoping it will bring sleep closer. In this lesson, you’ll practise observing the breath without managing it. By following its natural rhythm, you’ll discover that not everything requires your effort—and that the body already knows how to carry you towards rest. Day 3 Integration Practice: Once today, pause for three natural breaths. Do not change them. Simply notice: - Breathing in. - Breathing out. Let the breath do the work.

Lesson 4

Rest Behind The Thoughts

Leave the Day Unfinished for Now. At night, the mind often searches for closure. It replays conversations, organises tomorrow and returns to problems that still feel unresolved. In this lesson, you’ll learn that every thought does not need to be completed before rest can begin. Through gentle witnessing, body awareness and breath, you’ll practise noticing thoughts without continuing them—allowing the day to wait until morning. Day 4 Integration Practice: When the mind begins repeating something today, quietly notice: “This is a thought, not a task I must complete right now.” Then return to one physical sensation, such as your feet touching the floor or your hands resting.

Lesson 5

Trusting Sleep

Let the Body Complete What You Cannot Force. Sleep is not a destination you reach through effort. It is a natural transition the body enters when it no longer needs to remain alert, involved or in control. In this final lesson, you’ll bring together the essential practices of the course: receiving support, resting attention in the body, trusting the natural breath and allowing thoughts to wait. Through a complete Yoga Nidra experience, you’ll practise giving the body less to manage and allowing sleep to come in its own time. Day 5 Integration Practice: Continue using this simple sequence at bedtime: Feel the support beneath you. Rest attention in the body. Let the breath breathe itself. Allow thoughts to wait. Trust sleep to come in its own time. Let these become gentle reminders rather than instructions you must perform perfectly.
