Hi guys,
And welcome to Catastrophizing,
When your mind jumps to the worst case scenario.
My name is Kiona Howe,
And I am a licensed professional counselor in the Pennsylvania area.
And so today we are exploring a cognitive distortion called catastrophizing.
If you've ever found yourself jumping to the worst case scenario,
Feeling your body tense,
Or convincing yourself that something bad is definitely going to happen,
This practice is for you.
And so before we begin,
I invite you to take a big,
Deep inhale through the nose.
And a long breath out.
What is catastrophizing?
Catastrophizing happens when our mind predicts the worst possible outcome and treat it like a fact.
Maybe someone doesn't text back and your brain says they're upset with me.
You make a mistake at work and suddenly it becomes unfailing.
You notice discomfort in your body and your mind jumps to something extreme.
The brain often does this to protect us,
Not punish us.
It is trying to prepare us for danger,
But in reality,
It can be hurtful and frustrating.
And so when we catastrophize,
The nervous system often shifts into protection mode.
You may notice tension,
Racing thoughts,
Tightness in the chest.
Stomach discomfort,
Or an urge to fix something immediately.
I'm going to share some reflective questions that you can pause and do now or you can go into my description and you'll find the questions there as well if you need to come back at a later time.
And this is totally optional,
You don't have to do this.
But I invite you to just ask yourself gently What story is my mind creating right now?
What facts do I actually have?
Am I responding to evidence or fear?
If my nervous system,
My body felt safe,
Would I interpret this differently?
What is another possibility that exists?
So I invite you to take time now.
Or you can come back at a later time.
Taking a big,
Deep inhale through the nose.
Holding at the top.
Exhaling out.
Letting go.
I'm going to spend a minute.
Going over ways that we can practice reframing.
And so instead of this is going to end badly,
I invite you to try.
I don't know the outcome yet.
My fear is speaking loudly right now.
I can handle uncertainty.
Wearing is not the same as preparing.
Just taking a moment to let that sink in.
And when you're ready,
I invite you to place a hand on your body wherever you need support today.
And remind yourself,
I am safe enough in this moment.
I do not have to solve tomorrow,
Today.
I'm proud of you for taking this time for yourself.
Please feel free to explore the other cognitive distortions,
Also known as negative thoughts,
And use the tips and tools to help you overcome some of these thinking patterns.
Have a beautiful rest of your day.
And please,
If you like this,
Leave a review.
That helps me know if it's resonating,
And it also helps other people who may be searching for this type of information.
Them be able to find it.
