Take in a slow,
Deep breath,
Filling your lungs completely,
And then let it out with a long sigh.
Again,
Breathe in deeply,
And exhale,
Allowing your body to soften,
Each breath releasing tension,
Each breath guiding you inward.
Bring your attention now to your toes.
Imagine them growing warm,
Heavy and relaxed,
As though every tiny muscle is melting.
The warmth spreads through your feet,
Softening your arches,
Loosening your heels,
Until both feet feel completely at rest.
This wave of comfort moves upward,
Into your ankles,
Calves,
And shins.
Imagine warm water flowing around them,
Washing away the tightness of the day.
The muscles lengthen,
Soften,
And let go.
Your knees and thighs relax now,
Heavy,
Comfortable,
As though you are lying on a soft surface that molds to you perfectly,
Holding you with care.
Your hips and pelvis drop into full support,
Tension dissolving.
Notice your belly rising and falling with ease.
Each inhale expands your body gently.
Each exhale releases more than the last.
Imagine your breath as a tide,
Rocking you safely.
Let this same wave reach your chest,
Your heart steady,
Glowing with a soft light,
With each beat,
A pulse of peace flows through you,
Your shoulders sink downward,
No longer needing to carry anything.
That relief flows down your arms,
Into your hands,
All the way to your fingertips.
Now your throat softens,
Your jaw unclenches,
Your lips part slightly,
The muscles of your face loosen,
Forehead,
The skin of your scalp relaxing,
As if your mind is stretching out into open space.
Your body is resting more deeply,
With every breath,
And now your mind can rest too.
No need to solve or figure anything out,
Just allowing yourself to sing.
Imagine now that you're standing at the entrance of a long,
Beautiful corridor,
The walls curved gently around you,
Smooth and safe,
The floor beneath your feet is soft,
Like velvet stone,
Steady and grounding,
The air is cool and clear,
Carrying the faint scent of cedar,
Of warmth.
Of peace.
Along the corridor,
Lanterns are suspended,
Glowing with golden light,
Each lantern radiates a soft warmth,
Steady and calm,
They illuminate your path,
Guiding you forward,
And you realize that each lantern represents a step deeper into your own sanctuary.
You take your first step,
And the light of the lantern nearest you is a little brighter.
Ten lanterns ahead,
Each one inviting you further into rest,
Into ease,
Into the truth of who you are,
Ten,
The first lantern,
Its glow wraps around you like a blanket,
Your body softens,
Nine,
The next lantern,
With each step your breath deepens,
The lantern flickers gently,
You release the weight of the day,
Seven,
Golden light falls across your skin,
Reminding you of safety,
Six,
Halfway now,
Calmness pooling through every muscle,
Eight,
Lanterns ahead,
Each one carrying you inward,
Four,
Deeper still,
Lighter and heavier,
All at once,
Three,
Almost there,
Four,
The light soothes every corner of your being,
And now you arrive at the final lantern,
Its glow surrounds you completely,
Filling you with serenity.
From here,
The corridor opens into a wide chamber,
At the center,
A pool of still,
Shimmering water reflects the lantern light,
And you walk toward it slowly,
Noticing how your footsteps make no sound as though you're floating,
The air is perfectly still,
Time feels slowed,
Stretched,
Expansive,
You step close to the pool and gaze into it,
The reflection you see is calm,
Luminous,
At ease,
It is you as you truly are,
Beneath all the noise,
Serene,
Open,
Infinite,
As you gaze into the water,
Your body sinks even deeper into relaxation,
You may feel warmth spreading from your chest outward,
Or heaviness pressing you downward into comfort,
Or lightness as though you are drifting,
However it feels is perfect,
Each sensation carries you deeper,
As you linger here,
You realize that the corridor and lanterns were simply a path inward,
Inward to this quiet chamber of your subconscious,
Here,
Everything you need is available,
Here you can rest,
Release,
And receive,
With every breath you drift further into this space,
Every heartbeat guiding you gently down,
And every word you hear now moves straight into the part of you that knows how to change,
How to heal,
How to open to truth,
How to improve,
There is nothing you need to do right now,
Nothing to solve,
Nothing to improve,
Nothing to understand,
Just this breath,
And perhaps you don't even need to breathe differently,
You can simply notice that breathing is happening all by itself,
Your body has been breathing for you your entire life,
Even when you've been asleep,
Even when you were overwhelmed,
Even when you were unsure,
Your body knew how to keep breathing,
You might begin to notice where your body meets the surface beneath you,
The weight of your heels,
The back of your legs,
The gentle curve of your spine,
The weight of your shoulders,
The back of your head,
You are completely and fully supported,
And you may notice that the earth is not asking you to hold yourself up,
It is holding you,
And sometimes the mind forgets that it doesn't have to hold everything,
But the body remembers,
And if there is tension anywhere,
You don't have to remove it,
You can simply become curious about it,
And perhaps there is tightness in the jaw,
Or a subtle holding in the shoulders,
Or a quiet bracing in the belly,
And rather than forcing it to relax,
You might imagine that tension as something that has been loyal,
Something that has been trying to protect you,
Like armor that once served a purpose,
And you might quietly thank it,
And then let it go,
You can let this part know that for this moment,
It can rest too,
Notice how your breathing naturally lengthens when you stop trying,
And notice how your body subtly shifts when it realizes it is safe,
Your nervous system is always listening,
And it softens not by force,
But in response to safety,
Safety can feel like warmth,
Or heaviness,
Or softness,
Or even just a sense of neutrality,
There is no correct way to relax,
And your body knows its own rhythm,
You may begin to notice your eyelids growing heavier,
Or your thoughts becoming less sharp,
Edges softening,
Sounds fading into the background,
Even the sound of my voice can become something you don't have to focus on,
It can simply be like a distant lantern on a quiet path,
You don't have to walk toward it,
You can just rest,
And if your mind wanders,
That's perfectly natural,
Wandering minds are often preparing for sleep,
And as your body grows heavier,
Your inner world becomes more spacious,
And in that spaciousness,
Something old begins to unwind,
There may have been times in your life,
When staying alert felt necessary,
Times when your system learned that vigilance meant safety,
And that was intelligent,
It was adaptive,
It was wise,
Your nervous system learned quickly,
It learned how to scan,
How to anticipate,
How to breathe,
And perhaps it became so good at that,
That it forgot there were other modes of being,
But the body was not designed to stay on high alert forever,
Even the most watchful animal eventually lies down in the grass,
And tonight,
Your body is remembering its natural rhythm,
Not because you forced it,
Not because you earned it,
But because it is built into you,
Imagine now,
That inside you,
There is a small sanctuary,
A quiet inner room,
That has always existed,
It may look like a meadow,
Or perhaps a cabin,
Or maybe a shoreline,
Or simply a soft field of light,
This sanctuary has no demands,
No expectations,
No timelines,
It has simply been waiting,
Not impatiently,
Just steadily,
As you enter this inner sanctuary,
You notice something important,
There is nothing chasing you here,
Nothing is watching you,
Nothing is out valuing you,
The air is warm,
The ground steady,
The sky wide,
You might sit,
Or lie down,
Or simply stand still,
And you realize,
Your body does not need to guard you here,
Anxiety is often a loyal guardian,
It stands at the gate,
Looking outward,
But sometimes it forgets,
That the gate is closed,
And tonight,
You can gently shut the door,
And show that guardian,
That the gate is secure,
That this moment is quiet,
That this room is safe,
That there is no approaching threat,
You don't have to fight anxiety,
You don't have to exile it,
You can simply give it a chair,
Let it sit down,
Let it reside beside you,
Even guardians need sleep,
Imagine your nervous system,
Like a lake,
That has been stirred by the wind,
When wind blows across the water,
The surface ripples,
Waves form,
Distortion appears,
But when wind stops,
The lake does not need instruction,
To become still,
It simply settles,
And as it settles,
It reflects the sky clearly,
Your mind is that lake,
Your body is that water,
And now the wind is slowing,
Thoughts may still appear,
They can rise like fish beneath the surface,
But you don't have to dive after them,
They rise,
They fall,
They disappear,
And beneath them,
There is depth,
There is love,
Stillness,
Ancient calm,
Your body is remembering something very old,
Before words,
Before responsibility,
Before identity,
The rhythm of safety,
A newborn sleeps,
Because its system trusts that it will be cared for,
And somewhere inside you,
That imprint still exists,
Even if life required you to grow strong,
To stay alert,
To anticipate,
That original imprint of safety,
Is still coated in your cells,
You may notice your muscles softening now,
Your jaw releasing,
Your tongue resting,
Even the small muscles around your eyes,
Letting go,
Your heart slowing into a steadier rhythm,
Your breath deepening without effort,
This is not something you are doing,
It is something you are allowing,
Imagine now,
That the armor you've been wearing,
Begins to feel heavy,
Not in a burdensome way,
But in a way that invites removal,
You realize you don't need that armor here,
Piece by piece,
You've set it down,
The shoulder plates,
The chest guard,
The shield,
Each piece touches the ground,
With a soft sound,
And underneath,
Your body feels lighter,
Not exposed or vulnerable,
Just unburdened,
You may even sense that the earth beneath you,
Is absorbing that old vigilance,
Transmuting it,
Like soil composting fallen leaves,
Into nourishment,
Nothing wasted,
Nothing wrong,
Just transformed,
There is a version of you,
Who knows how to rest deeply,
A version of you,
Who does not scan the horizon,
A version of you,
Who sleeps without bracing,
You are simply remembering this version of you now,
Sleep is not something you need to chase,
It is something that happens,
When resistance dissolves,
Like a feather drifting downward,
It does not force its landing,
It simply follows gravity,
And gravity is pulling you now,
Gently,
Naturally,
Tomorrow can hold whatever it holds,
But tonight,
Your only task,
Is to receive,
Receive stillness,
Receive restoration,
Receive breath,
Your body knows how to repair itself,
Your mind knows how to sort itself,
Your heart knows how to soften,
And in sleep,
All of that happens without effort,
If a thought arises,
You might imagine policing it,
Putting it inside a small lantern,
And setting that lantern,
On the water of your inner lake,
It floats,
Glowing softly,
Drifting away,
You don't extinguish it,
You don't argue with it,
You just let it float,
And soon,
It becomes a distant light,
The night around you,
Grows deeper now,
Stars brightening,
Air cooling,
Silence expanding,
Your sanctuary is dim,
Safe,
Enveloping,
And your body responds to that darkness,
By slowing further,
Because darkness,
Is an ancient signal of rest,
Your mind,
May be hazy now,
Words blending,
Edges dissolving,
And you may notice,
That even if you try to stay awake,
Sleep,
Pulls you downward,
Like sinking into warm water,
Supported,
Nothing to manage,
You are allowed,
To stop holding everything,
You are allowed,
To trust this moment,
You are allowed,
To sleep,
And now,
Your body grows heavier,
And your thoughts,
Grow softer,
You may begin,
To drift,
Between waking,
And dreaming,
There is no line,
To cross,
No effort,
To make,
Just,
A gradual fading,
Your limbs,
Warm and loose,
Your breath,
Slow,
And deep,
Your heart,
Steady,
And quiet,
If any sound,
Reaches you,
It only,
Reminds your system,
That you are,
Safe enough,
To ignore it,
Your sanctuary,
Grows dimmer,
The stars,
Above,
Blur,
Gently,
Whatever form,
Your inner space,
Has taken,
Begins,
To dissolve,
Into darkness,
And in that,
Darkness,
There is comfort,
Like being wrapped,
In velvet night,
Like being cradled,
By the earth itself,
Your body,
Knows this descent,
It has done this,
Thousands of times,
And tonight,
It goes even deeper,
Healing,
Repairing,
Restoring,
You don't need,
To listen anymore,
You don't need,
To follow,
You can drift,
Drifting,
Softly,
Downward,
Into quiet,
Into safety,
Into sleep,
And while you sleep,
These affirmations,
Will repeat,
In the background,
Gently,
Helping,
Your nervous system,
To trust,
That it is,
Deeply safe,
To relax,
I am safe,
To rest,
My body knows,
How to relax,
I release,
The need to stay alert,
Calm flows,
Through me,
I trust,
My nervous system,
To settle,
I am supported,
In this moment,
My breath,
Carries peace,
I let go of tension,
I am held,
By the night,
My mind,
Softens naturally,
I do not need,
To guard this moment,
I am safe,
To sleep deeply,
My body,
Repairs,
As I rest,
Stillness,
Restores me,
I release,
Control,
I trust,
The quiet,
I am free,
To drift,
My heart,
Is steady,
And calm,
Sleep,
Welcomes me,
Gently,
I surrender,
To peaceful rest,
I am safe,
To rest,
My body knows,
How to relax,
I release,
The need to stay alert,
Calm flows,
Through me,
I trust,
My nervous system,
To settle,
I am supported,
In this moment,
My breath,
Carries peace,
I let go of tension,
My mind,
Softens naturally,
I do not need,
To guard this moment,
I am safe,
To sleep deeply,
My body,
Repairs,
As I rest,
Stillness,
Restores me,
I release,
Control.
I trust the quiet.
I am free to drift.
My heart is steady and calm.
Sleep welcomes me gently.
I surrender to peaceful rest.
