This simple practice uses 5 seconds to inhale and 5 seconds to exhale, creating a steady, rhythmic breathing pattern. Simply breathe comfortably and allow the rhythm to become natural. Slow rhythmic breathing can influence the communication between your brain, heart, and autonomic nervous system. Breathing at around five to six breaths per minute can increase heart rate variability (HRV) - a marker of the flexibility of the nervous system and strengthen the influence of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is involved in rest, recovery and regulation.
