Welcome to Tree Breathing,
Breath of the Forest.
Without trees,
There is no air.
Without air,
There is no life.
This truth is the heartbeat of every forest.
It's an ancient exchange of breath between earth and sky,
Tree and human,
Root and thunk.
And in this session,
We'll explore that silent conversation,
Weaving together reflection,
Gratitude and a simple yet profound breathing meditation.
So,
Settle in,
Find your comfy place,
Warm and cosy.
Follow your breathing in and out,
Relax and settle in still more.
Just let your shoulders and neck area relax,
Your arms,
Back,
Abdomen,
Hips,
Legs and feet.
Relax and breathe.
Breathing is your connection to life and the natural world and like all of nature,
It has a rhythm.
So just take a few moments to do nothing more than simply follow the rhythm of your breath and relax.
Notice your breathing.
Gently close your eyes and imagine standing beneath a beautiful grove of trees.
Notice their immense trunks,
The roughness of bark,
The subtle sway of branches overhead.
Feel the richness of life pulsing beneath your feet.
There's decaying leaves,
Soil teeming with roots,
Mycelial threads connecting every organism in a vast unseen web.
Consider how each tree inhales carbon dioxide and in return exhales oxygen,
Which is life for us,
Life for countless creatures.
And this breath cycle has continued for millions of years.
We are latecomers yet intimately woven into this beautiful tapestry.
Just take a moment and just reflect how does it feel to know your breath is part of an eternal forest cycle.
In what ways do you sense gratitude arising for this silent partnership?
Pause here for a moment and let these questions sit in your heart.
We'll now mirror the tree's breath in four phases.
So visualize roots growing from your feet,
Reaching deep into the earth.
Breathe in for a count of four,
Drawing nourishment upwards just as tree roots draw water and minerals from the soil.
Hold your breath briefly at the top.
Imagine sap rising within you,
Collecting vitality,
And it's ready to circulate.
So now,
A longer exhale for six counts.
Slowly release your breath and just visualize your lungs as branches,
Soft and open,
Exhaling oxygen into the world,
Your own gift to the forest of life.
A resting pause and just let your lungs empty fully,
Feeling lightness and space for the next cycle.
So let's continue this rhythm for three more rounds now,
Allowing your awareness to shift between body and environment.
With each inhalation,
Feel the earth's support and with each exhalation,
Release tension,
Offering your breath back to life.
So just continue now in your own time.
A grounding inhale for four,
One,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Hold for two,
One,
Two,
And extended exhale for six,
One,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six,
And a resting pause in your own time.
And once more,
Inhale for four,
Drawing nourishment upwards,
Hold for two,
Exhale for six,
And visualize your lungs as branches,
Exhaling oxygen into the world.
It's your own gift to the forest of life,
And rest in a pause,
Feeling lightness and space.
Wonderful.
Now just return to your natural breathing rhythm.
Place one hand on your heart,
The other on your belly.
Just visualize yourself as a young sapling,
Tender and flexible.
Feel the sunshine warming your leaves.
It's an embrace of light.
Next,
See yourself as an ancient oak,
Wide and wise.
Your roots are interlacing with other trees,
Feeling the solidarity of the grove.
Notice how both stages,
Youth and maturity,
Are essential.
And in our own lives,
We too grow,
Shed and renew.
So just take a moment to reflect.
What personal fall leaves are you ready to let go of?
And what new shoots of intention would you like to invite in?
Allow any images or words to surface without judgment.
Just be curious.
Good.
Now return to your breath with a gentle inhale and a gentle exhale.
Now that you've settled into the rhythm of breath and felt your connection to the forest,
Let's journey inward with a heart-centered meditation infused with light.
So with each inhale,
Invite a soft green glow to gather at the base of your spine.
And with each exhale,
Let that glow expand upward,
Filling your entire body.
Now see yourself in a cathedral of ancient trees.
Their trunks rise like columns.
Their branches are weaving a vaulted ceiling of leaves overhead.
Sunlight filters through in shafts of emerald light,
Painting the ground in shifting patterns of green and gold.
Just choose one tree in this grove,
Perhaps one that calls to you most.
Approach it slowly.
Notice the texture of its bark,
The play of shadow and light,
The sense of age and wisdom it carries.
Just sense that this tree is alive in you,
And you are alive in it.
Now place your awareness in your heart center.
Imagine roots growing from your heart space.
They're weaving down into the earth beneath the tree.
Just feel the nourishment of fertile soil flowing up these roots as a gentle,
Glowing energy.
With each inhale you take,
Draw that green light from the earth into your heart.
Feel it swirl there.
It's soft,
Alive,
And it's healing.
And with each exhale,
Allow that green,
Beautiful light to pulse outward from your heart,
Bathing your whole being in its regenerative warmth.
Take an inhale.
I draw healing in.
And as you exhale,
I share this life with all.
Once more,
Inhale,
Draw in healing.
Exhale,
Share light and life.
And as the light moves through you,
Invite whatever feelings,
Images,
Or messages need to be heard.
What part of me needs this green renewal?
What old fear or tension can I soften into hope?
What new intention would I like the trees to carry forward with me?
Just sit with each question as it arises.
There is no rush here,
Just the gentle unfolding of insight in the warmth of the green glow.
Just take a moment now.
Now,
Let the green light feather back into your heart and whisper silently to yourself or out loud.
I am rooted.
I am renewed.
I am part of the living forest.
Breathe those words deep into your heart.
Beautiful.
Take three long,
Nourishing breaths here now,
Savoring the final pulses of green warmth.
Slow,
Deep breath in.
Feel the green warmth around you and inside you.
And exhale slowly,
Letting go.
Two more breaths in your own time.
And once more,
Inhale,
Feel the life force moving through you.
And exhale,
Whisper silently,
Thank you,
Honoring the trees and this shared and sacred breath.
Wonderful.
So,
Gently and slowly come back to your surroundings.
Softly open your eyes and just take a moment now to observe the world around you.
Just notice any shift,
A sense of calm,
A sense of stillness,
A spark of clarity,
Or a deepened gratitude.
Carry this tree-breathing awareness into your day.
In every inhalation,
Remember the roots.
And in every exhalation,
Remember the branches.
So,
Thank you so much for joining me in this sacred exchange.
May your breath remain ever connected to the living network of trees.
And may that connection nourish you and all life.
With rooted love and open heart.
Namaste,
My friend.
