Hi,
This is Daphne.
If you're about to start driving and your body feels tense or anxious,
Let's take a few moments together to help your nervous system settle.
You can stay right where you are,
Seated in your parked car.
There's nothing you need to rush right now.
Begin by noticing the support of the seat beneath you.
Feel the back of the seat supporting your body.
Allow yourself to rest into that support for a moment.
You might quietly remind yourself,
I can take this one moment at a time.
Notice your hands,
Maybe resting on your legs or lightly touching the steering wheel.
Allow your hands to soften slightly.
Driving is something your body has learned through practice.
Your body already knows many of the movements it needs to make.
We're going to bring a little more sensation into the body.
You might begin gently tapping your fingertips against your legs or lightly tapping your chest or shoulders.
Just slow,
Gentle taps.
Tapping sends signals of sensation through the body that can help bring your attention fully into the present moment.
You might also gently tap your fingertips along your cheeks,
Around the jaw and forehead.
Let the taps be light and relaxed.
Notice the sensations.
And now allow the tapping to come to rest.
Next,
We'll try a simple practice.
Take a slow breath in through your nose.
And as you exhale,
You might gently hum a soft hum sound.
Let the vibration move through your chest and body.
The vibration from humming can send calming signals through the nervous system.
So just keep it going at your own pace.
Taking nice comfortable breaths in.
Feeling the vibration moving through the body.
These vibrations help stimulate the vagus nerve and send calming signals through the nervous system.
Let's do it this one last time.
And just allow your shoulders to soften,
Perhaps relaxing the jaw.
You might gently look around the space inside and outside the car.
Noticing shapes,
Colors,
Or movement.
Turning your head slowly from side to side,
Allowing your nervous system to orient to the environment.
And you might remind yourself,
I only have to respond to what's happening right now.
The road unfolds one moment at a time,
And you can move through it the same way.
Whenever you're ready,
You can begin driving.
You can go at your own pace,
And you can always take a pause if you need to.
You only have to respond to what's happening right now.
And if anxiety appears while you're on the road,
You can return to the steady breathing or softly hum again.
Remember,
You're allowed to take this one moment at a time.
Your body is already beginning to settle,
And even small shifts like this can make a difference.
So when you're ready,
You can begin driving,
And you can come back to your breath and your body at any point along the way.
