Meditation Timer OnlineJohn Borgen, Psy.D., BCBA-D is a licensed clinical psychologist and licensed behavior analyst. He earned his Masters degree in clinical psychology from Marquette University and his doctoral degree from the American Psychological Association-accredited clinical psychology program at Nova Southeastern University. He completed his predoctoral internship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has taught undergraduate and graduate students and worked with children, families and adults. Dr. Borgen approaches mindfulness from the lenses of applied behavior analysis and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Instead of categorizing experience, mindfulness is promoted by experiencing stimuli directly. For instance, experiencing sound without categorizing loud (too many decibels) or annoying (too high of pitch). Instead of doing the same thing over and over again, ACT promotes flexibility in the associations we make and the choices we have to act in the moment. Mindfulness facilitates both by assisting us in recognizing the links between sensations, emotions and thoughts and by grounding in the present to see what is available. Dr. Borgen has utilized mindfulness with clients and as part of courses. He linked short guided practices to content. An example is thought-focused practice and cognitive psychology.
