There's a good kind of boredom. It can make us curious, creative and tapped into flow. We need to consciously create pockets of time to simple while away in this state of being. Here's a short stream of consciousness piece I wrote about the importance of boredom in our lives.

Transcript

Boredom is a good thing.

An aimless wandering of the mind through the alleys and stream paths inside.

It has to happen slowly,

This wandering.

A stroll,

Not a speed walk.

Crunch of dry leaves,

Splash of water,

Wetness of grass under the feet.

Every little detail on the wings of the red ladybug on the yellow petaled flower.

On the other side of boredom lives creativity.

But before that,

On the inside of boredom lives curiosity.

Some might even call it mindfulness.

Hustle and bustle and zip.

Fill your brain with dopamine hits.

Scroll,

Scroll,

Scroll,

Double tap.

Distraction is the enemy of boredom.

Only at first glance though.

Dive deeper into the murky,

Inky waters below the shiny,

Shimmering,

Colourful surface of mental consumption.

Gluttony of information.

You will see distraction is a drug that feeds the bad kind of boredom.

Hit after hit after hit.

A dullening of senses.

A sickness in the mind.

A withdrawal into dingy darkness.

Distraction eats away at inspiration,

Creativity,

Flow.

The only powerful antidote?

A conscious application of boredom like moisturiser and tiger balm.

Loosening the muscles.

Nourishing the layers of the mind.

Making them soft,

Pliable,

Open.

Open to receive stray flecks of magic from the ether.

Floating particles of inspiration,

Creativity and flow.

Gently distilling them through the test tubes and beakers of the bored mind.

Unleashing beauty and meaning into this world.
