Loving-kindness meditation (sometimes called “metta” meditation) is a great way to cultivate our propensity for kindness. It involves mentally sending goodwill, kindness, and warmth towards ourselves and others by silently repeating a series of affirmations that helps us embody the qualities of a compassionate heart.

Let's put our hands on our belly.

Let's do a very grounding exercise.

Just one hand is enough.

Just breathe into the belly.

Feel that gentle movement of the breath in the body.

It's beautiful to see how the body tends to move gradually,

Always.

There's a rhythm for the body.

There is a gentleness ingrained in the body.

It's very strange when the body is abrupt,

Very occasional.

Most of the time the body is very gentle.

Place your other hand on the heart,

On the center of the chest,

The spiritual heart.

As you place your hands on your body,

You are symbolizing this self-care,

This listening to yourself,

This caring for yourself.

As you breathe in and breathe out mindfully,

Let that intention of self-care be there,

That you are there for yourself,

That you are listening to your needs.

Now let your hands rest in your thighs one more time,

Palms down,

And feel your legs,

Feel your foundation.

Soften your jaw,

Your tongue,

Your eyes.

Your throat and neck.

With the power of intention,

Send caring,

Loving awareness to your whole being,

To your body,

To every cell.

That this awareness that pervades the body cares for the body,

Cares for its well-being.

You also care for your emotional self,

For your psychological self.

You care for your personality.

You care for your needs and desires and hopes and dreams,

Like you are a well-wishing to yourself.

The Buddhist compassionate metta meditation,

You could say,

May I be happy.

May I be free from suffering.

May I experience true fulfillment in life,

Inwardly and outwardly.

May I be strong and healthy.

May my life be a blessing,

Not only for myself,

But for the world.

You can actually compose your own blessing to yourself,

Maybe one that would be really good for today,

With this moment in your life.

Now,

Just for a few moments,

Feel the love in those intentions,

The deep caring.

That's a fundamental,

Intrinsic energy of your own being.

Nature cares.

Nature cares for its own well-being.

It is a loving awareness.

You are this loving being.

You as well as every being in this universe is seeking fulfillment.

Can you be compassionate to your own yearning for fulfillment,

In the yearning of humanity?

From this feeling,

You can also say,

May everyone be happy.

May everyone be free from suffering.

May everyone find inner and outer fulfillment.

May everyone be healthy.

And feel that part of you that really wishes for the well-being of every being in this universe.

You care.

Compassionate heart.

Feel the compassionate heart of nature within you.

The mind becomes still when you experience the caring love of the heart.
