So this younger guy messaged me yesterday and told me he's been reading Young and also Michael Singer's The Untethered Soul and he's confused.
Should he be in his spiritual awareness observing everything happening on the human plane or should he be down in the mud doing shadow work and really connecting to what's meaningful about his mind?
And it brought me back to when I was his age,
Struggling with the same conundrum,
Obsessing over psychology books,
Trying to figure out why we're all so screwed up,
And then stumbling across Eckhart Tolle and going,
Hang on a second,
None of that other stuff really matters that much.
If you can just transcend and get perspective and just be present,
It renders all of that a moot point.
So I guess I'm just going to flush this psychology degree or what it could have been down the drain,
But it brings me to now.
A different perspective that anyone who's predisposed to either camp is going to think that the opposite camp is silly,
But the truth is you're both.
You're both a spiritual being and a human being and denying one or the other just makes you suffer,
Makes you out of balance.
If you obsess over your humanity,
Over your psychology,
Over your mind,
Then you can lack the perspective and the sense of humor and the sense of wholeness and completeness and everything is okayness right as it is here and now-ness of meditative awareness,
Of spirituality.
But if you're up there in the clouds all the time,
All these things that are out of balance with your nervous system,
All these patterns that are unconsciously running your life just continue operating because you haven't put in the time or work to dig into them.
And so maybe you could ask yourself,
Where am I on that spectrum?
Am I out of balance in some way?
And maybe it makes sense to emphasize one or the other for a period of time.
Maybe if you're all the way on the human side,
Maybe you go on a meditation retreat.
Maybe if your head's in the clouds all the time,
You dedicate a few weeks to doing shadow work continuously or whatever it is.
But once you've found some balance,
It can just be a matter of practically putting this knowledge into action by deciding to do 10 or 15 minutes of parts work or expressive writing or journaling every day,
Something to connect to your human and uncover and develop that.
And also dedicating 15 or 20 minutes a day to meditating,
To connecting to that space of pure awareness where everything is just cool as it is and you don't have to take things too seriously and you are the space in which it all unfolds and it's all perfect and complete already.
And by doing both,
By connecting to both on a regular basis,
You honor both.
You keep both at the surface of your awareness.
You're connected,
You're in harmony,
You're balanced,
Things flow and it's all good.
You're spiritual and a human being.
So go ahead and put that knowledge into action if you feel so inclined,
Perhaps in the form of scheduling some daily container time for both your human and your spiritual side.
And if this provoked any useful thought,
I invite you to leave a review and maybe let me know where you're at in your own journey of navigating this balance and where you want to go.
I would love to connect with you and answer any questions if I can be of any help.
And I hope you have an amazing day.
