With this short, guided mantra practice, you can create a deep state of concentration and calm the mind, which invokes an internal state of bliss. The ‘a’ in ‘ham’ is pronounced like the ‘a’ in ‘about’. Internally say, ‘so’ when you breathe in, and ‘ham’ when you breathe out. ‘So’ represents higher power/universal intelligence; ‘Ham’ represents individual human self/small self/personality concept. When we say, ‘so’ham’ we are recognizing the divine within ourselves, which is why it translates to, “I am That.”

Transcript

Sit or lie down in a comfortable and supported way with the spine in neutral alignment.

Soften the gaze or close the eyes.

Begin to breathe in and out of the nose using your belly breath or your long deep breath.

When you breathe in,

Internally say to yourself,

So.

When you breathe out,

Internally say to yourself,

Hum.

So hum.

So hum.

So hum.

So hum.

Continue this.

So hum.

Keep your attention on the mantra.

So hum.

So hum.

If the mind has wandered,

Bring it back.

So hum.

So hum.

So hum.

With your next exhale,

Release the mantra.

Feel yourself breathing.

Your awareness comes back to the breath and body,

To the space in which you are.

Take your time.

Slowly open the eyes whenever you're ready.
