Soji is practised as samu, or work practice, in Soto and Rinzai Zen. Monks clean the whole temple each morning, performing every stroke of the broom and wipe of a cloth slowly and deliberately, in silence, as zazen in action. There is no separate goal beyond the task itself; attention rests on the physical work moment to moment, the way a breath or mantra holds focus in seated practice.
Soji differs from ordinary household cleaning in two ways: its meditative intention and its requirement of silence. It differs from mindful-cleaning apps through its monastic Zen lineage. What is not yet supported: any trial of Zen cleaning itself, long-term follow-up specific to soji, or a claim that it replaces treatment for a diagnosed condition.
Across many trials, structured mindfulness and meditation have been linked to reduced anxiety, lower perceived stress, and eased depression in both clinical and non-clinical adults (Hofmann et al., 2010), (Chen et al., 2012), (Oberoi et al., 2020), and one trial found a structured mindfulness program worked about as well as a common anxiety medication (Hoge et al., 2022). Soji itself sits inside that family but has not been studied directly, so these results show the approach is plausible rather than proven for Zen cleaning.
