This is a simple guided mindfulness practice to bring awareness to our breath and the senses of touch and taste, by taking a few minutes to slow down and enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea. It's an opportunity to welcome some calm into the day and perhaps reframe how you think about coffee. Instead of relying on it to fuel your body, perhaps enjoy it as a way to relax and just be as you are in the moment.

Hello and welcome to this Coffee Break Meditation.

This is a quick practice that can be done discreetly while at work,

Home,

Or even your local coffee shop.

You can do this when you feel stressed or overwhelmed and just need a quick break to reconnect to the present moment.

If you're not a coffee drinker,

Feel free to replace coffee with your own favorite warm beverage.

And if you'd like,

Go ahead and pause the recording here so you can get yourself a beverage and settle into a comfortable position.

The purpose of this practice is to relax for a few moments and mindfully indulge the senses.

Once you have your beverage of choice,

Go ahead and sit comfortably with your back straight yet relaxed.

Now wrap both of your hands around your cup.

And if you're able to,

I invite you to close your eyes.

If not,

That's okay.

Go ahead and gently rest your gaze downward.

And just begin to bring your awareness to your breath.

Taking a nice deep breath in through the nose.

Hold the breath at the top for just a moment.

And then fully exhale out of the mouth.

As you continue to breathe slowly but naturally,

Bring your awareness to the warmth radiating from the mug or cup.

Perhaps noticing how comforting it is to hold the warm mug between your fingers and how soothing this simple act can be.

Or maybe you notice the weight of the cup in your hands.

Or maybe you have a fun or inspirational message on your mug that you notice.

There's no right or wrong here.

We're simply observing what's here for us in this present moment.

Next bring your attention to the aroma of your beverage.

Is it a strong scent or maybe it's very faint or delicate?

Perhaps it's an earthy or spicy scent or maybe even sweet or fruity.

There's no right or wrong here.

We're just simply noticing the aroma.

And now noticing how the aroma affects you.

Does it make you feel energized?

Perhaps it evokes a sense of calm.

Again,

There's no right or wrong.

Just observe the feelings and sensations going on right now for you without any judgment.

And finally,

Bring the cup to your mouth and take a sip.

Really savor the taste.

Notice your awareness on it and how much you enjoy it.

And when you're ready,

Take another sip and notice how the liquid feels as it flows over your tongue and down your throat,

Leaving behind the taste that you enjoy so much.

Continue to sip your drink,

Breathing naturally and focusing on your sense of taste until your mug is empty or your break is over.

Before continuing with your day,

Let's take one last deep breath in through the nose,

Holding it at the top for just a second,

And then fully exhaling through the mouth.

You can begin to wiggle your fingers and toes,

Maybe roll your shoulders back and stretch the spine upwards.

And if your eyes are closed,

You can gently open them at this time.

Thank you for joining me in this brief coffee break practice today.

Take care and enjoy the rest of your day.
