Give yourself an opportunity to investigate the nature of your mind and to challenge ideas about the limits of being merely physical matter. Find your inner self that you can draw upon in times of need and remind yourself of something greater and more noble in the journey of your life.

Find a comfortable position and make your preparation.

Make a powerful motivation and make it your own,

But as an example you could think I'm going to investigate the nature of my mind for the purpose of deepening my understanding of who and what I am.

This clarity of awareness will help me expand my mind and go beyond the physical barriers and other obstacles to my understanding of the nature of reality and the nature of consciousness.

Take your mind back in steps to as far back as you can imagine,

Slowly,

Slowly moving back through the years from adult to teenager to child to baby.

Your memory will bear witness that there is a continuous thread from one moment to the next.

There are no spaces,

Nor beginnings or endings.

There's no jumping into being – it's not like episodes in your life,

But a very long movie with no pee-pee breaks.

As you look back you may find that you get caught up in a memory and involve yourself in the drama of that period.

But using mindfulness,

Resist the attachment to replaying the events either pleasant or unpleasant and remain observant and detached and move on just as we watch thoughts arise and let them go.

Do the same with your memories and your imagination.

When you can go back no further,

Use your creative imagination to take you back to that baby before memory.

Maybe having seen older photos of yourself,

Again you can recognise that you didn't just pop into existence but evolved.

Now go back.

Can you imagine your birth?

Can you imagine being in the womb?

Yourself as the foetus in your mother's womb gradually taking shape from a meeting of your father's sperm and your mother's egg.

This was definitely the beginning of your current body,

Although unrecognisable and very hard to imagine.

Your brain gradually developing.

But what about your consciousness,

Your awareness,

Your mind?

You just consider that your mind has been a mind since before that magical yet scientifically proven union.

Consider that on fertilisation your consciousness moved into that tiny emerging body.

Both impermanent in nature,

Nothing stuck,

Nothing constant,

Moving and changing from moment to moment and both mind and body being preceded by an earlier cause.

How does that feel?

Consider that matter cannot produce the energy of the consciousness so that when you arrived into this world and were labelled with your current name and influenced and learned behaviour from external influences you came with a body and a mind that had arisen out of its own previous continuity in accordance with the natural law of cause that has an effect,

That has a cause that creates an effect.

Sit with this incredible concept and consider the possibility of the beginningless,

Endless,

Continual nature of your consciousness,

Luminous,

Clear and knowing.

Sit in that awareness and experience its vast and expansive nature.

Thank you.
