Too often, we spend our lives trying to get away from our painful feelings of fear and shame, disconnecting from and numbing our body, getting lost in self-judgment and obsessive thinking. There are moments in life that are filled with true suffering, and yet life is beautiful and we can find a way through this suffering and pain. This self-compassion meditation gives valuable tools for us when we are struggling with hurt.

Hi,

I'm glad that you're here and I'm sorry that you're struggling right now.

I have struggled in many moments in my life too and there's rarely been things that people say that can make me feel better but feeling connected with some other people has sometimes made me feel better and so I hope you know that I care about you and I'm sorry that you're hurting right now and I'm so glad that you are here practicing with me.

I want to invite you to sit with me if you can and find just any quiet and safe place where you can sit comfortably.

It's okay if on the inside you are hurting.

You are strong enough to be able to sit with this for just a few minutes.

If you need to walk that's okay too.

Right now I am sitting and wherever you are I invite you to just take one full deep breath into your body.

As we breathe in allow yourself to just relax a little bit into wherever you are.

As we breathe in just allow yourself to breathe in and with each breath relax just a little bit more into where you are.

Allow yourself to be where you are.

You do not have to rush to get anywhere else.

You've done so much in your life.

So many things that have brought joy to other people.

So many things that you have done that you have learned from.

There are so many people that you have learned from.

So many people who you have made their lives better.

There are so many things that have happened in your life that have made you the person that you are right now in this moment.

And for whatever reasons and whatever things brought you to this moment they brought you here to build a little strength and comfort into your life.

Take a moment just to thank yourself for that.

Take a moment to thank yourself for bringing yourself here.

Breathe in that thankfulness for yourself.

Sometimes thinking ourself can feel weird and uncomfortable because we're not used to doing it.

And that's okay.

That's totally natural.

But see if you can allow yourself to open up a little bit to receiving a thank you from yourself as you breathe in.

And now whenever you're ready place one or both hands over your heart.

And then as we breathe and as we rest our hand over our heart say these following things to yourself.

You could even say these as messages you are sending to yourself or to your heart.

This is a moment of suffering.

Suffering is sometimes a part of life.

May I be kind to myself in this moment.

May I give myself what I need.

Breathing in.

This is a moment of suffering.

Suffering is sometimes a part of life.

May I be kind to myself in this moment.

May I give myself what I need.

This is a moment of suffering.

Suffering is sometimes a part of life.

May I be kind to myself in this moment.

May I give myself what I need.

Now just allow yourself to be with yourself.

Allow yourself to be here with your tender heart.

You are the only person that feels all of your feelings and lives all of your life.

You know what you need best.

Allow yourself to sit here.

Just breathing and being and noticing what you think,

What you feel.

You don't have to wrestle with these thoughts or feelings.

You don't have to judge them as good or bad.

They are just here,

A part of you.

And you can notice them.

And see if you can send yourself what you need.

Maybe what you need is peace.

Maybe love.

Maybe you need safety or care.

Maybe you need belonging.

You and your tender heart will always belong with yourself first and then with others.

As you breathe in,

Send yourself whatever it is that you need.

It may not be all that you need,

But even a little bit helps.

A flower does not turn away water just because it wants more.

Even a little bit helps.

As you breathe in,

Send yourself what you need and see if you can open up to receiving what you need.

As you breathe in,

Send yourself what you need.

And as you breathe out,

Let go of whatever is in the way of you receiving what you need.

As you breathe out,

Let go of any walls that you have around your tender heart.

As you breathe out,

Let go of any armor that you are carrying around yourself so that you can receive the things that you are sending to yourself.

You can send yourself love.

In fact,

That's where love starts.

When storms pass over a flower,

They deepen their roots.

So that they do not get swept away.

When storms pass over flowers,

They deepen their roots so that they can become stronger.

You are strong,

My friend.

In this practice,

You have deepened your roots.

I wish you peace.

I wish you strength.

I wish that you receive all that you need.

Be kind to yourself,

My friend.
