So,
What happens when someone gets under your skin and just stays there?
Maybe it's something they said,
Or how they act.
Maybe it's a pattern that you've seen over and over and over again.
And if you're honest,
Your mind's probably built a pretty tight case against them.
It's what the mind does.
It simplifies,
It labels,
It turns a person into a story.
They are selfish,
They don't care,
They always do this,
They're evil.
And once that story locks in,
It's hard to see anything else.
So,
Today,
We're not trying to force forgiveness.
We are not trying to pretend that everything's okay.
We're just going to gently widen the lens.
So,
Let's take a moment to settle in,
Just letting your body land wherever you are.
There's no need to sit perfectly,
Just be here.
And bring your attention to your breath.
We're not controlling it,
We're just noticing it.
The inhale.
.
.
The exhale.
.
.
For a few cycles here,
We're just arriving.
Now when you're ready,
I'd invite you to bring to mind someone you've been struggling with.
And there's no need to pick the hardest person in your life,
Just maybe someone who creates a little bit of tension.
See if you can notice what shows up first.
Maybe it's an image,
Or a memory,
Or maybe it's a feeling in the body.
You might feel tightness,
Or heat,
Or resistance.
It's okay.
Just acknowledge it.
Now,
Here is where we begin to shift,
Just a little.
Instead of focusing on what they've done,
Just see if you can consider this.
This person,
They are not just that moment.
They are a whole life,
A whole human being.
Just like you.
At some point,
They were a child.
Try to imagine that.
Not perfectly,
Just generally.
A younger version of this person.
Learning things for the first time.
Wanting to be happy,
Wanting to be safe,
Just like you.
And as that person grew,
They picked up habits,
Defenses,
Coping mechanisms.
Some were helpful,
And some maybe not.
Just like you.
Now,
You don't need to justify their behavior,
And you don't have to agree with it,
But just notice if you can see that it didn't come from nowhere.
Their actions are shaped by a lifetime of experiences,
Just like yours are.
And if you find that you're swept away in a wave of emotion or thoughts,
Just come right back here to the breath,
Exhaling.
And I'd invite you,
Gently,
To see if you can notice something neutral or even slightly positive about this person.
It doesn't have to be big.
It could be as simple as they care about their family,
Or they work hard.
And if nothing comes to mind right away,
That's okay.
Just stay open to the possibility.
Remembering that no one person is just one thing.
And as you hold this person in your awareness,
See if you can begin to repeat quietly to yourself.
May you be safe.
May you be at ease.
May you find peace.
We're not forcing or creating pressure to feel a certain way.
And even if that feels mechanical,
That's okay.
All we're doing here is planting seeds.
And if resistance shows up,
If part of you says they don't deserve this,
Just notice that too,
Without judgment.
It's part of the experience.
We're not actually doing this for them.
You're doing this to soften your own heart,
So that you don't have to carry the weight of that tight story.
There is a line from Pema Chodron that feels really fitting here.
Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded.
It's a relationship between equals.
And maybe that's the shift.
Not seeing them as the problem,
And you as the one who's right,
But just two human beings,
Both imperfect,
Both just trying to navigate things the best that they know how.
And from that place,
Maybe the story softens just a little.
It's not erased.
It's not fixed.
It's maybe just less rigid.
Alright,
Let's take one more deep breath here.
And as you move throughout the rest of your day,
See if you can carry this with you.
The reminder that people are rarely just the thing that bothers you most about them.
They're more than that one thing.
Just like you.
And sometimes remembering that is enough to create a little space,
A little ease,
A little less weight to carry.
Thank you so much for joining me.
I hope you're happy.
I hope you're healthy.
And I hope that you're at ease.
