This course, presented by ordained Interspiritual minister James Anthony Walker, is a result of James' life partner Rev. Constance McClain’s 30-year exploration into the vast world of spiritual practices and religious inter-connections. This course is an adventure of the Spirit which will transform you, and change the ways in which you perceive yourself, your personal possibilities and your relationships with others. The teachings invite you to develop an ever expanded sense of respect and reverence for a world in need of larger love, compassion and human rights. The course draws from the book "Mindful Paths: Steps Towards A Living Spirituality" co-authored by Rev. James and Constance, that remains a core element of a fully-accredited college curriculum in Holistic Health.


Meet your Teacher

James Anthony Walker began his formal studies in music composition at Boston University, and later as a Graduate Teaching Fellow and founding Director of the Computer Music Studio at The University of Chicago. While his musical style has evolved well beyond that of those early years, he still finds it a distinct honor to have studied with a number of Pulitzer Prize winners, as well as many gifted mentors along the way since. An ordained InterFaith/InterSpiritual Minister, today he blends his musical vision, his over 10 years of research into generative techniques, and his spirituality into music that has been highly acclaimed for use with meditation, relaxing ambient environments, sound healing and therapy for the sleep-deprived. Together with life partner Constance McClain, he is co-founder of Oasis of the Heart, an inclusive InterFaith/InterSpiritual ministry without walls.

The Soul and Impermanence

Today, we'll talk about the soul. Those uniquely expressed qualities of our inner life, and who we are at our core. Something of the eternal in each and every one of us.

Lesson 5

Honoring Our Inner Voice

Today, we'll talk about our internal compass. That thing at our core which always points true north. Some call that our intuition, or inner voice. We'll also talk about how it’s important to journal our spiritual journey so far in this life. It’s only a snapshot, and will continue to change over the course of our lives ... but as we begin to look at the things, the people, the events … good and bad … that have shaped our view of the world, it’s important to know how we got there.

Cultivating The Heart

Today, we'll talk about how we might begin to consider the heart, not the mind … as our primary organ of perception, and how our heart health directly impacts the dimension of our spiritual health. We'll also talk about the concept of thoughts as things, and how they can deeply affect our heart/mind health.

Reflection, Discernment & Our World View

Today, we'll talk about the critically important practices of reflection, and discernment ... and about how these tools can begin to lead us into a better understanding of our world view … how it came to be, and what if anything might change in order that we are able to own it as truly ours, and not the product of people, things and circumstances which at one point or another were either knowingly or unknowingly guiding us in a direction.

Exemplars

Today, we'll talk about exemplars. How their lives show us an embodied spirituality, and how they provide us with essential criteria and clues for evaluating and explaining our own spiritual development. Most importantly, how they show us the powerful role faith can play in motivating and sustaining our efforts in the service of our most noble purpose. We'll also look at how to identify the one core value our exemplars which shines most brightly for us, usually because that value is so highly integrated with their day to day lives.

Today, we'll talk about sacred space … what it is, and how can it help you feel a distinct connection to the world around you, and also to the Divine energetic within you. That it can be an inside space that’s as away as possible from what in many cases is the incredible hustle and bustle of your home, and/or an outdoor space that brings its natural beauty and grace to you, surrounding you by its very nature with tranquility.

James Anthony Walker has a wonderful way to help me compare and contrast Spirituality and Religion without creating dualistic, critical or adversarial thoughts. A great reminder that “thoughts are things”. He asks questions that provide an opportunity to go within to our subconscious to understand our beliefs.
