Sleep Skills: Practical Techniques For Restful Nights

With Mark Rowland

If falling asleep has started to feel like something you have to work at, this short three-day course offers a different approach. Rather than guiding you through long sleep meditations, each session introduces a practical technique that you can understand, practise, and use independently when sleep becomes difficult. You’ll explore autogenic training, using sensations of heaviness and warmth to encourage physical relaxation; stimulus control, a behavioural approach that helps rebuild the association between bed and sleep; and paradoxical intention, which can reduce some of the pressure and frustration created by trying too hard to fall asleep. Each session lasts around ten to fifteen minutes and combines clear explanation with a short introduction to the technique, giving you tools you can return to on difficult nights. You may discover that one method works particularly well for you, or that different approaches suit different situations. The aim is simply to give you more options when sleep doesn’t come as easily as you’d like.

Lesson 1

Autogenic Training: Helping The Body Settle

In this first session, you’ll learn how autogenic training uses simple repeated phrases and awareness of physical sensations such as heaviness, warmth, and steady rhythm to support relaxation. You’ll also try a short guided example, so you can become familiar with the technique before using it independently at bedtime.

Lesson 2

Stimulus Control: Rebuilding The Bed-Sleep Connection

In this second session, you’ll explore stimulus control, a behavioural sleep technique designed to strengthen the connection between your bed and sleep. You’ll learn why spending long periods awake in bed can sometimes reinforce wakefulness, when it can help to get up for a while, and how to return to bed when genuine sleepiness begins to appear.

Lesson 3

Paradoxical Intention: Taking The Pressure Off Sleep

In this final session, you’ll explore paradoxical intention, a technique that can help reduce the pressure and frustration that often build when sleep feels difficult. Rather than trying harder to fall asleep, you’ll learn how allowing wakefulness can sometimes ease the struggle and create a calmer relationship with the process of sleep.
