The Talmud notes that "All beginnings are hard." William Bridges reminds us in his book "Transitions," all changes have an ending, a middle period, and a new beginning. In this meditation, let's take stock of all the endings, wildernesses, and new beginnings in each life, acknowledging all the thoughts and feelings that come up. I invite you to begin in your current spot at this exact moment,

Connecting to yourself and your personal state,

Where you are physically,

Mentally,

Emotionally,

And spiritually as we begin,

Acknowledging yourself and your environment,

Little perturbations in the stillness,

Whispers and noises in the quiet,

Any agitations in your body,

Acknowledge and accept.

Letting your eyes close and using your breath to direct oxygen and nutrition to any sore or clenched or tight spots in your body,

Using your own natural processes to help you relax and slow down,

Coming into a deeper comfort,

Noticing or just imagining your pulse,

Imagine reducing the pace of the flow of blood in your body,

Slowing down even your digestion.

Breathing in a little deeper,

Out a little slower.

Extending your breath,

Seeing if you can't allow your body to take up an even larger and fuller volume.

Scanning your form with a gentle and generous awareness,

Finding spaces of lightness and heaviness and everything in between.

At every moment in the world,

Things are ending.

Synapses complete their electric journey.

Cells resolve and dissolve.

Breath is expelled.

Outside you,

Grasses and leaves wither and fade.

Everyone,

Everywhere experiences endings.

The end of an employment.

The end of a relationship.

The death of a pet,

A loved one.

Retirements,

These are happening at every moment.

Breathe into these endings with acceptance.

Acknowledging in your own life all of the continual endings and conclusions that occur at many moments.

As you breathe,

Extending your breath deeper in and slower out.

Acknowledge and accept what ends.

As you breathe,

Understand that endings come with a spectrum of emotions.

Grief,

Disappointment,

Resentment,

Relief.

All wholly normal and valid experiences.

Breathing in deeply,

Out casually.

Becoming softer and less resistant to these terminations.

At every moment in this world,

People are in transition,

In that in-between,

In a wilderness,

Unknown and uncharted,

That follows endings and precedes new beginnings.

A vast and open time,

Perhaps filled with uncertainty.

A pregnant period.

Very often a scary time.

Breathe in deeply,

Out slowly,

Acknowledging that that experience is shared and common and natural.

Part of life is a wilderness,

Unexplored and waiting to be explored.

Breathing in,

Acknowledging that space,

Breathing out with acceptance.

A wilderness period can be full of a broad range of emotions.

Common,

Natural and understandable.

One might feel joy,

Anxiety,

Excitement,

Curiosity.

This by its nature is expansive and accommodates all these various feelings.

Breathe into these sensations with generosity and breathe out gently.

Breathing in and breathing out.

The last stage of any vital transition is the beginning.

A birth.

A new awareness.

A budding relationship.

A new job or school.

A time of regeneration.

The springtime of buds and flowers.

And sprouting.

Breathing in to that new space.

Breathing out.

And then again,

Deeply.

Out slowly.

Even beginnings are a host to a wealth of emotions.

Surprise,

Fear,

Confusion,

Excitement,

Big thrills and little thrills,

And everything in between.

Acknowledge those possibilities as you breathe.

And breathe out,

Accepting them.

Whatever you might be feeling is normal,

Natural,

And can be understood.

You can always breathe through the transitions,

Endings,

And journeys,

And arrivals.

You are always present and yourself.

And whatever you experience is the right experience.

Continuing to breathe and accept all the parts of these transitions occurring within you and everywhere.

The you for this meditation on transitions as this year comes to an end. It gave me space to feel a sense of completion and accomplishment as I contemplated the natural ebb and flow of beginnings, endings and the space in between.

Excellent meditation about transitions. Lots of descriptive phrases I find very helpful.
