Going still.
Just flopping into it,
Into the quiet and the wait.
Noticing any anxiety or eagerness,
Leaning forward,
Pulling back.
Giving up,
Letting go.
Being alone with this moment.
Watching lights fade from every room.
Letting the noise fade and dissipate.
Feeling the whoosh of your breath or your pulse or just the air around you.
Gently rocking.
Gently rocking.
As though on a boat,
In a pond,
The gentle breeze just letting yourself sway into your resting place.
Acknowledging all that was,
All that's coming and then surrendering them.
Putting them aside or in a little cubby hole.
They aren't here right now,
They aren't with you in your bed.
There's nothing you can do about those things.
But you could get a good night's sleep and maybe be fresh and resolved in the morning.
Notice your breath.
Where are you beginning with your breath?
Where would you like to go with it?
Would you like to slow down?
Would you like to bring it deeper?
Toy with those questions.
Questions that don't have any particular right answer.
Just curious.
You wanna yawn a little or inhale and then exhale with the sound selah that comes from the Bible.
Or breathing and breath.
Selah.
Let your muscles relax.
Let your body get heavy.
If you haven't already,
You can close your eyes.
Moving into the night.
Moving into a season of rest.
Cruising the downslope of your energy and letting yourself get slower,
Almost still.
Quieter,
If not silent.
Open and ready for whatever comes as you rest.
Could be sleep,
Could be dreams.
Could be just a good relaxing time.
Not something we can control.
The body lets us know what it wants.
Start by letting go.
Consider forgiving.
People were rude,
People were confusing,
People were manipulative,
People were passive aggressive.
You could hold on,
Rage and resent all you want.
I can't stop you,
I wouldn't stop you,
But it's probably not gonna help you sleep.
So you could try a little forgiving.
Maybe something as simple as wishing that no one be punished on your account.
I'm gonna pick up your grudge tomorrow.
It'll be waiting for you.
And since you've been hurt,
You can safely guess that you've hurt others.
Maybe you wanna tentatively formulate an apology when you say or don't say right and don't send,
Whatever works for you,
Even if you never carry it forward.
A way of even forgiving yourself.
May it be acceptable.
And you're lying down and the lights are fading,
Darkness is pooling inward and dreams approach.
Say a little wish for sweet dreams,
Pleasant thoughts through the night.
Comfort in your bed.
Let the light fade.
Let your eyes grow tired.
Maybe you yawn.
Maybe you say Sela,
Sela.
We take a few moments just to acknowledge the wholeness of the universe.
That all of this is one and shared and common and has an origin and perhaps a shared destiny.
We're all made up of the same molecules and atoms,
Electrons,
Protons,
Neutrons,
Indivisible particles in common.
Maybe that fills you with a sense of wonder or gratitude.
Or even just generosity towards other living things and all that is created and creative.
Maybe as you grasp a sense of this oneness of all things,
It fills you with love and respect.
Through the things you learn,
The things you do when you travel,
When you come home.
Walking,
Sitting,
Standing,
Resting,
You notice that the world is shared,
Unified,
Established in common bonds and you're protected,
Shielded and sheltered.
Wrapped in soft wings behind a sturdy shield,
Healthy,
Strong,
Defended,
Safeguarded in refuge,
Nothing to harm you.
You are sated,
You have enough,
Even in distress,
To lie down and sleep.
Selah.
You prepare for sleep in wholeness and harmony,
Peacefully,
In harmony,
In peace.
You are protected,
Protected and rescued.
You can go out of the day with confidence that you will come in peacefully to a new day.
The world goes on and on and on and on and on.
You are protected,
Protected and rescued.
You can go out of the day with confidence that you will come in peacefully to a new day.
The world goes on and on and on and on and on.
You are protected,
Protected and rescued.
You can go out of the day with confidence that the world goes on,
The universe is eternal.
Your life and all lives are held dearly.
Great and good forces looked over those who preceded us,
Who came before.
Great and good forces look over us now.
And good and great forces will look over those who come next,
On and on again.
The universe blesses you and the universe protects you like a night watchman.
Take it in,
Breathe.
Get steady and slow and heavy.
The universe shines on you with grace.
Feel it coming down.
And the world looks towards you to offer you peace.
Accept it if you can.
Breathing,
Letting it all in,
And letting everything go.
The universe doesn't sleep,
But you can.
Surrounded by loving forces.
All day we fiddle with questions,
We ask,
We ask,
We ask.
All day we fiddle with questions,
We ask,
We wonder,
We doubt.
We put aside those questions to our right hand with the goodly force responsible for doubt and faith and questions.
More questions than answers.
It's a good way to live.
It's a good way to live.
We grapple and we run in a day.
We lift and carry,
Hold and drag.
We use emotional vigor and energy and we can let go of that,
Stop that energetic living,
Putting all of our strength to our left side with a great and good force responsible for vigor.
A great force holds a light ahead of us to guide us through darkness.
And behind us,
A sweet and good force prepares our bodies for healing through sleep.
Massaging in new energy and soothing stiff muscles,
Giving love to broken bones and broken hearts.
And glowing over all of us,
Holiness,
Something we can't explain,
Know,
See,
Touch,
Truly understand.
There's more.
There's more.
Take a few last moments to shimmy and twitch and scratch and shake.
Pulling it all in,
Squeezing,
Squeezing tightly,
And then letting it out,
Just letting it go.
Sala.
You are in the pocket of this incredible universe.
So small and precise in your bed,
Resting place,
And the universe goes on.
It doesn't need your help right now.
It is looking out for you.
You don't have a job right now.
Nothing to do,
No one to save or protect.
Nothing to fear.
The universe goes on and holds out a cup for you.
You entrust your spirit and your body into the hand of a loving universe as you sleep,
And it holds you in return.
You are in the hand in the palm of a loving universe.
You have nothing to fear.
