Hello,
Happy early autumn from my little cottage in Scotland.
I've just been on a snuffle and forage in the hedgerows to get this lovely big vase full of the colours,
Rowans,
Blackberries.
Mycomastasis,
All the things that suddenly appear at this time.
So I've written this poem to capture the atmosphere and feeling of the time and hopefully it will inspire you to go out and do your own noticing and maybe do some journaling or write a poem of your own.
So here goes.
The great seasonal wheel turns towards early autumn.
With the afterglow of late summer purring in our bodies and in the land,
Our days become lulled and languorous like honeyed mead.
The close-knit canopies of the trees are heavy and bowed over.
Their life force has been redirected into the berries,
Fruits,
Nuts and seeds.
White hazelnuts in their frilly fairy caps are puckering up for autumn's first kiss.
Blackberries we will toss into our baskets for crumble and pie are sweeter than when we last checked.
The rowanberries are redder.
We make beauty forages along species-rich hedgerows,
Where there are smells and colours we could crawl into and peer out of,
Like the green man soothsaying his enigmatic wisdom.
Not in words,
But in what our souls need more,
Leaves sprouting from his mouth and ears.
Curls of wild honeysuckle.
The exact shade of hairbell.
Sunkissed and satiated,
We stretch out under a favourite tree.
An old birch or oak.
To rest and digest,
To reflect on what kind of bounty our efforts through the natural year are going to yield.
We contemplate,
Lazily,
Which of the first fruits of our projects are ripe enough.
To ease from the branch and fall effortlessly into our outstretched hands.
The mellifluous buzz and hum of the nectar-gatherer.
The mellifluous hum and buzz of the nectar-gatherers,
The wasps,
Horseflies and worker bees,
Fill the air with their cyberitic symphony.
How to make The mellifluous buzz and hum of the nectar-gatherers,
The wasps,
Horseflies and worker bees fill the air with their symphony.
Oh to be me,
We all seem to be saying.
Oh,
To be me.
