
Journey Toward Peace

Aum Aum Aum Aum The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tse is known to have said,
If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
And if there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.
We are the very source of peace we hope to see in the world.
The heart is within our beating hearts and emanates outward from there.
When the heart is full,
Unconditional love is released.
And from there,
Compassion flows.
At that moment,
Each of us is a mirror of love.
And when others feel that openness and vulnerability,
They too are filled with compassion.
With each person and sentient being that you imbue with unconditional love,
The world around you becomes an even more peaceful mirror of yourself.
We transform the world by transforming ourselves.
So let's begin a process of accessing the peace within our heart and expanding it.
Find a comfortable seat and close your eyes.
Now take a deep breath in and hold it a few moments.
Then release.
Take another deep breath in.
And let's sigh as we exhale.
Let's do that one more time.
Inhale.
Hold.
And sigh.
Let's journey now to the sweetest place outdoors that you've ever been.
A place of calm,
Bliss,
A place of effortlessness,
Where you are aligned with the cosmic flow.
A place where you are totally relaxed and happy and peaceful.
Let's journey to your virtual sweet spot.
Now with your eyes closed,
Take a deep breath in and envision that you are standing in front of a closed door.
You reach out and open it.
You step through.
And you are standing barefoot on the beach.
The salty mist of the ocean blankets your face and you smile as the warm sun dries those beads of moisture as quickly as they land.
Pelicans fly in formation up the coast and dolphins arc themselves out of the waves to let you know they're out there.
You feel a glow from the innocence of the situation.
Your heels sink slowly into the warm,
Moist sand under your feet as a soft foam laps at your toes.
The hypnotic metronome of the surf connects you to the pulse of nature.
As you breathe,
So do the waves.
As you breathe,
So do the waves.
Are you breathing?
Or is the universe breathing you?
You turn around with your back to the ocean and you see a forest straight ahead in front of you.
The warmth of the sun paints your back as you walk toward the forest on a soft dirt path that soothes your feet as you step closer to the forest.
As you approach,
You sense the inviting and nurturing nature of this forest.
You step into the woods and look around.
Deer dance in the distance.
Red,
Green,
And yellow birds dart through the shimmering leaves creating a canopy high above.
And you see some kind of body of water glistening in the rivers of sunlight coming through that leafy sunshade.
You can't see it clearly.
Is it a river?
A stream?
A lake?
A pond?
Or a fountain trickling into a pool?
As you get closer,
You can hear the trickling,
Gurgling flow of water splashing over rocks.
You explore deeper into the forest as you see the water.
It's a river cascading over a waterfall and then winding down into a gentle ribbon of a stream.
Fish dance through the bubbling waves that curve the banks of the river right past you.
What are the other sounds of this environment?
Are there bird songs and insect calls in addition to this current of rushing water,
Chirps,
Squeals,
Caws,
Clicks,
And cackles echo as tree trunks creak from the wind gently bending their branches and stirring their leaves?
Animals calmly move about in the woods.
You drink it all in.
A dove cooing.
An owl responding to a call.
A squirrel fox playing hopscotch on fallen,
Crunchy leaves.
Take a deep breath in.
What does it smell like?
Are there any distinct aromas?
The earthiness of a forest floor?
The clear air of the mountains.
Are there fragrant flowers nearby?
The sweet scent of incense?
Take another deep breath in.
Whatever that scent is,
It is relaxing and soothing.
Slowly breathe and enjoy it.
There's a comfortable place for you to sit.
Even lie down if you wish,
Right beside the river.
The soft grassy area beckons you.
What does it look like?
Walk over to it and relax in whatever way feels comfortable,
Knowing that you are supported by the earth beneath you and cushioned by a tall,
Soft,
Green grass couch that contours to your body.
A few gentle rays of the sun peek through the sky and bathe your face with tender warmth.
You smile.
Encircled by nature,
You just observe,
Melt in and bask in the innocence of your surroundings.
Your daily stresses and anxieties seem so far away,
So small in comparison to the peace you feel within and the complete support you feel from the universe.
A gentle,
Warm breeze cradles you with the sensation of comfort.
You have truly found your sweet spot.
You see the divine in everything around you.
You feel a part of everything.
And you realize that everything is a part of you.
And you say out loud,
Aham Brahmasmi,
I am the universe.
You inhale,
Deep and slow.
And you gently exhale.
And you are aware that it is so still around you that your breath in and out is the sole activity outside of your body.
The sound of water drifts into the background.
The bird songs have drifted into silence.
And you drift into your breath.
And the sound it makes as it flows in and out of your nostrils,
In and out of your throat,
In and out of your lungs.
Keep slowing your breath.
With each breath you are in dynamic exchange with the universe.
Slow down and make your breaths last longer.
Your heart will begin to relax,
Begin to calm.
With each slow and deliberate breath,
Your body starts to slow down.
Bring your awareness to your heart.
And you will feel the presence of your body.
You will feel the presence of your body.
Your body starts to slow down.
Bring your awareness to your heart.
Feel it ease into your breath which continues to slow.
Gaze around your sweet spot.
Feel your surroundings soften even more.
The colors of everything around you are brighter,
Deeper,
More intense.
The green of the leaves,
The vivid colors of the birds in the trees,
The billowy whiteness of the clouds in the sky,
And the varied shades of brown in the trunks of the trees.
Those trees breathing life into your lungs,
Into the lungs of the beautiful animals that share your sweet spot as they gaze at you with unconditional love.
Now take a deep breath in and slowly exhale as you return back to the present moment.
Leaving your peaceful oasis deep within your heart,
Always open and available to you.
Your sweet spot waiting for the next time you'd like to visit.
And when it feels comfortable,
You can open your eyes.
Look in the mirror and see the face of peace.
