Welcome to this practice,
The Fierce Friend Meditation.
This is based on Dr.
Kristin Neff's practice and her groundbreaking theory of fierce self-compassion.
Dr.
Neff sees self-compassion as having two complementary halves,
One tender and one fierce.
Tender self-compassion is all about kindness,
Care,
Softness towards yourself and others.
But fierce self-compassion involves setting boundaries,
Standing up for yourself and your loved ones,
Saying no if someone is trampling over your boundaries or harming you in some way.
This meditation will be especially helpful if you struggle to be assertive or stick up for yourself,
Or if anger is a tricky emotion for you,
If you need a bit more strength,
Determination and fierce energy in your dealings with other people,
Especially the tricky people in your life.
So,
Let's begin.
Start by sitting in a comfortable position with your back upright but relaxed.
Feel your feet in solid contact with the floor.
Gently roll your shoulders back and let them drop.
Then take some slow,
Deep breaths.
In through your nose and out through your mouth.
Try counting to four on the in-breath and four on the out-breath.
Keep breathing.
As you breathe deeply,
Let your belly rise and fall with each breath.
Imagine it's like a balloon,
Inflating on the inhale and deflating on the exhale.
Keep breathing deeply for another 30 seconds.
Now,
In your mind's eye,
Imagine you're in a safe place.
This could be a place you've already created in another meditation practice,
With me or another teacher.
If so,
That's great.
Just go there in your mind.
If you don't have access to an imaginary safe place,
Think of somewhere that feels safe and comfortable for you.
It could be a cosy cabin with a crackling log fire,
Or a gorgeous tropical beach with soft white sand and palm trees swaying in the breeze.
Your safe place could be an alpine meadow,
With lush green grass,
Vibrant wildflowers and bees buzzing from bloom to bloom.
Spend a few moments imagining a place that feels just right for you.
When you've chosen somewhere,
Spend time making it as vivid in your mind as possible.
Enjoy this special place,
Using all of your senses to fully inhabit it.
Now,
I'd like you to imagine you invite someone to join you,
A fierce friend who has come to help you in some way.
This might be a real person from your life,
Perhaps a friend or family member who embodies qualities like strength,
Determination and courage.
It could be someone from a favourite book,
Movie or TV show,
A religious figure or political leader you deeply respect.
This person is also wise,
Kind and protective,
And you could imagine them standing up for you,
Or a cause that's close to your heart.
Spend a few moments choosing someone who embodies just the right mixture of strength,
Decency and respect.
When you've chosen someone,
Bring them to your safe place and imagine sitting across from them.
Take in their energy,
Their facial expression,
Posture and demeanour.
How does it feel to be sitting with this person?
As you sit together,
Know that this person is also wise and insightful.
They know you deeply and understand everything you're going through,
All your strengths and weaknesses,
Your proud moments and those you'd rather forget.
Then speak to your friend,
Asking any questions you might have for them,
Perhaps about how to deal with some thorny problem or difficult person in your life.
What does this wise person have to offer you?
Listen to what they have to say,
Which is just what you need to help you feel stronger,
More powerful and able to navigate this challenging situation.
Take in their wisdom and see if you can feel what it's like to have someone in your corner,
Standing up for you,
Supporting you,
Guiding you through a tough moment or upsetting situation.
Can you feel in your body what it's like to receive help and support in this way,
Which might be new or unfamiliar?
Then see if they have anything to offer you,
Perhaps a gift or something you might need right now,
To help you feel stronger,
Safer and more protected in the world.
If so,
Let yourself receive it with open hands and heart.
If nothing materialises,
That's fine.
Just spend some more time sitting with your friend and soaking up all their strength,
Kindness and concern for you.
Finally,
Allow yourself to realise that this fierce friend is actually part of you.
All their strength,
Wisdom,
Protectiveness and powerful caring is inside you.
This part of you is always there,
Always waiting,
Always ready to step in front of more vulnerable parts of you to keep them safe,
Especially with unkind or untrustworthy people in your life.
Allow this knowledge to sink in,
That what you seek from other people is already available to you,
If you can learn to develop and tap into this rich inner resource whenever you need it.
Then you can say goodbye to your friend for now and let the image start to fade away.
It's fading,
Fading and then it's gone.
Now take one final deep breath and open your eyes.
Thank you for practising with me,
My friend.
I hope you enjoyed this meditation and can carry these feelings of strength and resilience into the rest of your day.
