Welcome to this meditation,
Ancestral connection.
So today we're going to look to really connect to our roots,
To really connect to what it means to be human,
What it means to be conscious and alive at this time in the universe.
And we're going to scan back a little bit on our whole evolutionary history and kind of visualize this whole narrative which may help bring new context into our modern time and into our lives today.
So just as we get started now,
I invite you to come into a comfortable position.
This may be seated,
This may be lying down.
Whatever your body feels it needs today,
Making sure your spine can be straight.
And just taking in a couple of deep breaths in through the nose and out through the nose.
Really just slowing everything down,
Slowing the rhythm of the breath down.
Becoming aware of your body.
How does your ribcage move as you breathe?
How does the air feel as it passes in and out through your nasal passages?
And really grounding our attention now in the base of the spine,
An area often associated with our root,
The root chakra.
And just taking a couple of breaths into this base of the spine.
As we do this,
It's very normal for the mind to kind of wander off and find something to think about.
So just bring your attentiveness to realizing that and readjusting your attention back into this base,
Back into this real primary object within you.
And I like to sometimes almost imagining that I'm breathing in and out through this point.
So I can almost feel a subtle in-breath at this base and a subtle out-breath.
It might be a slight kind of internal contracting feeling and then a kind of expansive and softening feeling.
So just find out how that works for you now.
And on your next inhale now,
You're just going to shift the attention of the body all the way up,
Up through the chest,
Up into the throat and into the face,
Into the eyes as they rest here,
Closed and relaxed.
Really softening the eyes.
And we're going to start now by visualizing a narrative of the universe,
A very young universe where not much is really happening.
There's a great field of potential,
Of possibility towards the future.
Right now things move slow.
There's a couple of stars burning bright.
And just imagine yourself to be part of these stars for a second,
Just as in the same way we were breathing into our base earlier.
Breathe into the stars so you feel they can almost intensify with each inhalation and exhalation.
And as you do this,
You kind of become more involved with the star and you're witnessing its chemical interactions,
The way it's shining out its light upon its solar system.
And you can kind of feel all the planets orbiting you as a star,
You as this kind of center mass of gravity.
So just take a moment to really embody those directions and let go to however your imagination presents this.
And as you keep the breath flowing naturally,
Your vision comes to see a planet in a distant star system with enough water on it,
With the right kind of conditions that might give way to a certain warmth and a biology.
And you can kind of really bring your perspective,
Pour your perspective into this planet and start to witness all these kind of microorganisms,
All these creatures of old beginning to develop,
Beginning to evolve.
And see if you can for a moment kind of relate to them,
These very kind of primary movements,
This give and take,
This kind of dialogue and communication with other organisms,
Just at a very basic,
Primary,
Spatial level.
And as time goes on,
As you relate deeper into this organism,
You can almost feel it.
It complexifies,
Enough neuroconnectivity and consciousness enters it that it begins manifesting itself in new kinds of ways and re-allow yourself here to morph into whatever your imagination entertains.
Whether it's kind of like an amphibious creature,
Whether it's into something that even grows wings and flies,
Just see and feel nature expressing itself through a plethora of ways.
And you're kind of also witnessing all the plant life,
All the ecosystem inhabited by these creatures and how there's this interdependency,
This constant dialogue,
This constant communication.
And we're going to kind of focalise now,
Bringing all our attention and energy on this mammal-like,
Human-like creature and really use your human noun,
Humanness now,
Really embrace your humanness in the story.
Taking a couple of breaths,
Maybe moving your fingers ever so slightly just to feel those fingers.
And this human creature begins to walk,
Begins to contemplate its own existence,
To sing,
To cry,
To make art in the name of discovering itself and asking further questions of its own existence.
And now you witness the emergence of art,
Drama,
Theatre,
Tribal culture.
And feel the intensity as more humans begin to amass their knowledge bases,
Improve their communication and linguistic ability.
Notice how more humans come together and kind of witness the creation of civilisations and cities,
More complex structures of organisation.
And really now just accepting everything that's in this space,
All the emotion,
All the drama,
This whole narrative and dialogue.
And as time goes by and modernity comes into play,
Really start to relate more to this time,
This moment in humanity,
This technological advance.
The confusions of this moment,
The detachment from our instincts,
The innovation,
The ingenuity,
Everything that encompasses our time right now.
Just kind of bearing that all in our mind and our consciousness.
Taking another deep breath,
Feeling your chest rise and as you exhale soften into this moment.
I invite you to ask your body the question,
What does it mean to you to be human in this time?
Just let your body kind of respond organically.
Maybe it's not a rational thought but it's more of a sensation,
Just what does it mean to be human in this time?
Taking a breath with that.
And secondly now,
What can we learn from our ancestry,
From the chain of evolution and narrative of consciousness?
What can we learn from this long history,
This long story up until this moment?
Again ask your body this and just feel the response,
Go with whatever comes.
And letting go of all thoughts now,
Just kind of embodying the sensations,
Perhaps the purpose,
This lens into the now.
And surrendering,
Letting go of any resistance to naturally be,
To naturally be you,
To embrace your humanity.
And as this practice now draws to a conclusion,
We take a moment to give thanks to the long evolutionary lineage that inspires us today.
We take a moment to give thanks for this moment of being human and the capacities that we have.
And a thank you to yourself for taking the time today to engage in a bit of imagination,
Contemplation and inspiration.
Thank you.
Namaste.
