This meditation is best suited for a time when you feel symptoms of chronic or acute pain, but you're in a state of relative calm. If/when you are in high fight-or-flight, my Feeling Into the Good meditation would be a better choice. In this meditation, I guide you through letting go of resistance to the pain by gently exploring it with your mind. Sometimes, letting go of the resistance brings an element of softness to the mind and body.

Start in a chair with your feet on the floor,

Sitting in a cross-legged position,

Or lying down,

If that's most comfortable for you right now and you can stay awake.

Begin taking unusually deep breaths,

In through your nose and out through your mouth.

As you take these breaths,

I'll walk you through your body from head to toe as you relax each part deeply on the exhales.

As you exhale,

Feel the tension dissipate in your head,

Then your face,

The muscles of your jaw,

The back of your neck,

Down into your throat,

Your shoulders,

Upper back,

Your arms,

Down into your hands,

And then relax back into your heart,

Down through the torso,

Where so many organs are housed.

Relax into your hips,

Your thighs,

Your knees,

Calves,

Ankles,

And finally your feet.

Imagine golden cords extending from the bottoms of your feet,

Gently pulling down through the earth,

Through the soil,

The water table,

Down into the rock and the magma,

All the way down into the core of Mother Earth.

Allow these cords to become one as they plug into the center of the earth and become one again with all the other souls out there,

Uniting you deep within Mother Earth.

Feel the rooting and groundedness of this safe and loving space.

Now slowly and gently see if you can find that place of discomfort in your body and allow yourself to feel into it.

To begin to accept it for a moment without resistance or distraction,

Welcome it and the wisdom that it has for you.

As you allow yourself to be with it,

See if you can visualize the discomfort.

Give it a shape,

A color,

A texture,

A movement.

Maybe you're a smooth gray oval,

The shape of an egg.

You're turning slowly,

But not in a smooth way.

You're turning so that the bumps on the ends push harder into me on their rotation.

I don't know,

It may sound silly and weird,

But that's okay.

You're simply trying to let go of your thinking mind and settle into your right brain.

This is where the wisdom lies.

This mental description also helps you to not focus on making it go away.

It allows you to simply be with it.

So be creative.

Once again,

Give it a shape,

A color,

A texture,

And in your mind's eye,

Watch it move.

As you notice the discomfort from this perspective,

Maybe you can begin to sense that it's not stagnant.

Maybe it feels a bit like energy.

Maybe you can feel its movement.

Just sit with it for a moment.

Now do a quick scan of your body once again.

This time,

See if you notice another area that's not neutral.

It doesn't have to be uncomfortable,

Though it certainly can be.

It could be pleasant or unpleasant.

Just notice this sensation as well.

Allow it.

Feel it.

Then go back to the original area.

Maybe create a little dance between the two.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

Are they similar?

Are they different?

As you focus on one,

Does the sensation in the other dissipate?

Or can you feel them both at the same time?

Can you connect the two sensations?

Do they want to play or dance somehow?

There's no right or wrong.

You're simply allowing yourself to creatively feel these subtle,

And maybe not so subtle,

Sensations.

Now that you've begun to witness these energies in yourself,

You can express gratitude for the wisdom they bring.

Thank the sensations for their messages.

And thank your body for supporting and loving you.
