The armchair,

A guided visualization for meeting your best self.

Welcome dear friends,

This is Sarah and I am so happy to have you with me.

Before we begin,

Find yourself a comfortable position.

Maybe you'd like to sit in an armchair,

Get comfortable and cosy.

Maybe you'd like to lie down.

But whatever position you choose,

Just settle in now.

Maybe you need a pillow under your head.

Maybe you need blankets to be warm.

Take time now to relax,

Take the weight off and get ready to begin our journey.

Let's start just by closing your eyes.

And as you do that,

Pay attention to the sounds that you can hear.

Can you hear sounds outside of the room that are far away?

Can you hear sounds in the building that you're in?

Are there sounds in the room?

Is a clock ticking?

Is there a creak in the floor?

Just notice all of these and then let them go.

And as you sink just that little bit deeper into your chair or into your bed and into the pillows,

Try just to bring your awareness to your breath.

Really deepen your inhale and see if you can breathe all the way down into your belly so that it expands.

And with your exhale,

Just see if you can let go just 5% more.

As the sounds come and go,

Just let them.

And as you keep deepening that breath and slowing it down,

Bring your awareness just to the tips of your fingers.

Maybe they feel warm and tingly and just let them relax.

And as you do that,

See if you can feel that relaxation start to spread.

Let that warm feeling spread up through your knuckles,

Your wrists,

Your forearms,

Your elbows,

Through your upper arms,

Up into that shoulder.

Maybe squeeze the shoulders up near your ears and let them go.

And as you let them go,

Feel that warm relaxation spread down through your chest,

The top of your back.

Feel it arrive in your belly.

Notice any sensation that might be there.

Are you tense there?

Are you anxious?

Breathe the warm relaxation down.

Let it spread through your thighs,

Down to your knees,

Your calves,

Ankles,

The top of your foot,

All the way down to the toes.

Wriggle your toes,

Maybe squeeze everything,

Make fists,

Squeeze up those shoulders again,

All the muscles in your face,

In your forehead,

And just let them go.

Let yourself be supported by the chair,

By the bed,

By the floor,

By the earth.

And know that you're held.

I'd like you to see yourself now in an armchair.

Take a look at the chair.

We see.

Is it an old,

Shabby,

Overstuffed armchair?

Maybe there's stuffing coming out of the arms.

Maybe it's made of leather that's all old and soft and worn.

Maybe it's made from a beautiful,

Soft fabric,

And it's got a huge,

Cosy cushion and a footstool.

Whatever your armchair looks like,

Sit down and just get comfortable.

Maybe there's a blanket.

Maybe there's some soft music playing in the room.

Maybe it's a rainy,

Cold,

Autumnal Sunday afternoon.

You can hear the rain battering on the window panes.

You can hear the wind howling,

But you're cosy,

You're safe,

And you're warm,

Wrapped up in your chair.

Maybe you have a glass of wine.

Maybe you have your favourite hot drink,

A book.

Maybe there's a lovely film playing in the background.

Maybe there's a fire crackling.

Just let yourself sink into your chair.

And as you sit there,

Wrapped up,

Listening to the weather and the sounds in the room,

You feel yourself just gently start to drift off.

Your eyes close,

And you slowly drift asleep.

As you dream,

You realise that you see a building in front of you and a door.

And as you walk towards it,

You realise actually that it's yours,

And you live there.

What does the building look like?

Is it a beautiful cottage in the countryside?

Is it a tall block of flats in a city?

Is it a grand family home?

Are you walking up a path towards a doorway?

Are you walking through a gate?

Keep walking towards the door.

Closer you understand that you live there,

And that if you knock on the door,

You'll be able to see that best version of you.

You're almost right there now.

What colour is the door painted?

Does it have a letterbox?

What's the handle like?

Is there a number on the door?

And as you arrive in front of it,

You know that it's time to knock,

And it's time for you to see that beautiful,

Best version of you who's on the other side.

You look down and you watch as you lift your hand,

And you knock three times on the door.

The door swings open almost at once,

And there you are.

And you stand and you look,

And you take in this beautiful version of you,

And they are so happy to see you.

What do you look like?

What is the best version of you wearing?

What can you see behind them in the house where they live?

Who's with them at the door,

Waiting so excitedly to greet you?

They give you a huge smile and they extend their arms out and they pull you in for a huge hug.

And as they do,

They ask you excitedly,

When,

When have you come from?

And you tell them the date and they laugh,

And they say you are almost there.

It's nearly time.

They're so excited for you to come inside and they take you by the hand,

And you step through the door with that beautiful version of you,

And they take you inside your home.

What does it look like?

Who's there?

How is it decorated?

Is it warm?

Is there art on the walls?

You follow them and you find yourself in a kitchen,

And you sit down at the table and they're pouring you tea or wine,

And they're laughing and they're so excited to have you there.

As you sit in front of this best version of you,

There are some questions that you want to ask.

And as you sit and look at each other,

You're able to connect with them and ask for the steps that you need to take to be that version.

That best version of you reaches out and they take your hand,

And you listen for the answers.

And you sit together and you laugh and you talk and you cry maybe,

And you think of all the things that you've overcome,

That you've worked through and that you've worked on to get towards that best version of you.

And you know now that it is so close,

And you know the steps that you need to take to get there.

And as you sit in this lovely,

Beautiful room and you feel that love from yourself,

To yourself,

For yourself,

That best version of you just looks towards the clock,

And you understand that it's time to come back now,

But that you have a plan and that you will visit very soon.

You say goodbye with a huge hug.

And as you step out of the kitchen and out of the door,

You start to see that armchair ahead of you again.

And you turn once and you wave,

And that best version of you is beaming back and waving at you.

And as you walk away,

You start to see that armchair come ever closer.

And then you can feel the chair beneath you again.

You can feel the blanket that surrounds you.

And you realise that you can hear that wind again against the windows,

And you can hear the rain.

You stretch out your ankles and your toes.

Maybe you circle your wrists.

Maybe you stretch your arms up overhead.

And as you snuggle in your chair,

You open your eyes.

And you understand where it is you want to go,

And you understand what it is that you need to do to be that best version of you.

Stay in your chair for a while.

Make some plans.

Set some intentions.

And feel the love that that best version of you is sending to you from their beautiful home.

Stay curled up and relaxed until you're ready to move.

Thank you so much for listening,

Dear friends.

With lots of love.

I'll see you soon.
