The Six Hungers

With Juan Vega (Monk Mode Society)

Every human being is hungry. Not only for food, money, love, or success, but for ground, aliveness, dignity, belonging, healing, and a way to give something back to life. In The Six Hungers, Juan Vega guides you through an original Dharma framework for understanding human need, craving, attachment, and freedom. These six lessons blend Buddhist wisdom, mindfulness, lived experience, and body-based reflection for people practicing in real life: tired minds, uncertain seasons, complicated relationships, and hearts trying to heal without pretending everything is fine. You will learn how safety can become control, aliveness can become noise, mattering can become performance, belonging can become clinging, and healing can become another fight against yourself. Then you will learn the open hand. This course is for anyone who wants to understand what they keep reaching for, meet their hunger with compassion, and take one honest step toward freedom.

Lesson 1

Ground: A Place To Stand

Every human being needs somewhere to stand. Before we can love well, grow well, or offer anything to the world, we need to feel safe enough to stop bracing. In this lesson, we’ll explore the first of the Six Hungers—the hunger for Ground—and discover how stability begins not by controlling life, but by learning to return to ourselves, one honest moment at a time.

Lesson 2

Aliveness: A Reason To Wake Up

Being alive is not the same as feeling alive. We can move through the day, handle our responsibilities, and still feel far away from ourselves. In this lesson, we’ll explore the second hunger—the hunger for Aliveness—and look at what happens when joy, energy, curiosity, and desire go quiet. You’ll learn a simple way to notice what brings life back into the body without forcing happiness or pretending everything is okay.

Lesson 3

Aliveness: The Life Beneath the Noise

In this lesson, we explore the hunger for aliveness — the human need to feel awake, connected, and present inside our own life. This teaching looks at the difference between true aliveness and constant stimulation. Through Dharma reflection and a simple full-contact practice, students learn how noise, screens, entertainment, and distraction can imitate life without actually helping us feel present. This lesson invites students to return to one ordinary moment with full attention and rediscover the life already here.

Lesson 4

Matter: Dignity Without an Audience

In this lesson, Juan explores the hunger to matter — the human need to know that our life has value, place, and meaning. This teaching looks at recognition, comparison, unseen labor, and the pain of feeling overlooked. Through Dharma reflection and the practice of one clean gift, students learn how dignity can be witnessed by others without depending on an audience to create it. This lesson invites students to offer something real without abandoning themselves or turning their worth into a performance.

Lesson 5

Belong: The Grip We Call Love

In this lesson, we explore the hunger to belong — the human need for connection, love, family, friendship, and a place where we can finally put the armor down. This teaching looks at the difference between love and clinging. Through Dharma reflection and honest relationship inquiry, students learn how fear can enter love, make us overgive, swallow truth, abandon ourselves, or hold too tightly to a bond. This lesson invites students to love without disappearing, belong without self-abandonment, and meet connection with more truth, courage, and compassion.

Lesson 6

Offer: What Healing Is For

In this final lesson, we bring the six hungers together and explore what healing, growth, and freedom are ultimately for. This teaching looks at the open hand: the moment when we can feel our needs without being ruled by them. Through Dharma reflection and a final integration practice, students revisit ground, aliveness, mattering, belonging, healing, and offering as one human path. This lesson invites students to carry one clean step forward, meet hunger with wisdom, and let their life leave less suffering behind.
