Do you ever hit one of those spots in life where you know meditating would make everything better and yet you just can't seem to get yourself to do it?
Well if you are here,
Congratulations,
You actually got yourself to do it.
And that's in the face of all those dishes to do,
All those decisions to make,
Messes to clean up,
Even emergencies to face.
So now that you're here,
Settle down.
Let that energy drop into a more grounded,
Centered space.
Inhale your breath in and let it go.
So I was in a spot like that recently when I knew I needed to meditate but I just couldn't get myself to do it.
I kept telling myself if you can just sit,
Breathe,
Center,
Life will go so much better.
And yet I avoided my meditation bench like it had thumbtacks sticking up on it.
One day I couldn't avoid it any longer.
I knew I had better get my butt on my bench or suffer the consequences.
And sure enough,
As soon as I sat down,
All kinds of thought waves crashed into me.
These were the very ones I had been wanting to avoid.
There was my ex,
My feelings,
My fears.
I sat there.
I braved the storm dropping down deep into my center.
It wasn't long before I heard my phone buzzing.
It was in another room and I had turned the ringer off but I could still hear it.
A part of me longed to get out of that ocean wave storm,
Whatever you want to call it,
Of thoughts that was going on in my head,
Anything to get me off my bench.
So I almost got up and answered it.
At the same time,
I knew how many spam calls I'd been receiving lately,
Like six or seven a day.
This was more than likely just another one of those.
As I kept my seat,
As I braved the waves,
As I returned to my center,
I realized our thoughts are often like those spam calls.
They come at us when we're trying to do the right thing,
When we're trying to be engaged and present in our life.
They annoy us with their persistence and they offer us the chance to say,
Oh,
Here you are again.
Even more than that,
Our thoughts,
Like our spam calls,
Give us the opportunity to choose whether or not to pick them up and answer their call.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Be okay with what is.
Sit with whatever arises.
Say yes,
This belongs.
And remember that when we meditate,
We are invited to witness our thoughts.
We can't stop them.
We cannot stop them.
But that idea of a witness,
It's actually like caller ID.
Oh,
Here's some spam again.
We notice it.
We do not pick it up or answer the call.
We let it go.
And we breathe in.
And we breathe out.
And we keep coming back to this practice that helps us hold on to our center.
Sit.
Stay.
Choose which thoughts you will answer and which ones you will let go of.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Live light and shine.
