Welcome to this guided meditation.
Today I invite you to slow down enough to notice what's already here.
There are really extraordinary gifts hidden in our ordinary lives.
So often our minds move quickly from one task to the next,
One goal to the next,
One problem to solve after another.
We become used to the comforts and all the conveniences that support our lives every single day.
Many of these things that make our lives easier become invisible simply because they are familiar.
And today,
We will gently bring them back to our awareness.
Find a comfortable position and allow your body to settle.
Let your hands rest softly.
If it feels comfortable,
Gently close your eyes.
Take a slow breath in through your nose.
And a long gentle breath out.
Again,
Breathing in relaxation.
Exhaling tension.
Another breath in.
And out.
Let your breath rise and fall naturally.
Allow your shoulders to soften.
Relax your jaw.
Unclench your hands.
Find the support beneath you.
And notice that in this moment there's nowhere else to be.
There's nothing to accomplish,
Nothing to fix.
Just be here.
Notice this moment.
Notice your breath.
Bring your awareness to the simple fact that you are breathing.
Without effort,
Without planning,
Without needing to remember.
Your body has been caring for you every moment of your life.
Notice what that sensation feels like as the cool air enters through your nose and the warm air exits out your mouth.
Notice the rise and fall of your chest as your lungs fill with each inhale.
And release on each exhale.
Each breath arriving.
Each breath leaving thousands of times a day.
It's like a quiet little miracle happening in the background.
Just take a moment to appreciate your breath.
Not because it's extraordinary,
But because it's so consistent.
Now imagine you've just begun your day.
Maybe you wake up,
You walk towards the restroom,
You turn the handle.
And clean water flows out.
It's clear,
Fresh,
Available to you within seconds and notice how ordinary that feels.
And yet,
Imagine needing to walk miles and miles to even collect water.
Imagine wondering whether or not it's safe to drink the water.
Imagine rationing every drop.
Now return to this very moment,
Feeling gratitude for the water that arrives in your life with such ease.
The water that washes your hands,
Brushes your teeth.
Cleans your dishes.
Hydrates your body throughout the day,
Supports your life.
Imagine stepping into a warm shower.
Feeling the warmth against your skin,
The comfort and the relief.
The soothing sensation that helps begin and end each day.
Notice how quickly your mind can label this as normal,
Expected,
Automatic,
Yet countless generations lived without such convenience,
And countless people around the world still do.
Take a moment to appreciate warm water.
Not as a luxury,
But as a gift.
Now picture yourself opening your refrigerator.
Imagine seeing fruits and vegetables.
Food that's stored safely.
Available whenever you need it.
Think of the countless people involved to make that happen.
Farmers,
Harvesters,
Truck drivers,
Warehouse workers,
Grocery clerks,
Cashiers,
People you may never meet.
All helping place nourishment within your reach.
Allow yourself to appreciate not only the food itself,
But the invisible web of human effort and community that brought it to you.
Imagine holding a piece of fruit.
Maybe a strawberry or an apple.
Notice its color.
It's fragrance.
Its texture.
The sunlight that helped it grow.
The rain that nourished it,
The soil that supported it.
The hands that harvest it.
Take a moment to feel gratitude for something so simple.
Something that may be eaten in just a few bites.
It required so much to come to existence.
Now bring to mind your transportation,
Maybe your car,
A train,
A bicycle,
A bus,
Skateboard,
The ability to travel maybe miles in minutes.
To visit loved ones,
To reach work or school,
Explore new places.
Notice how easy it is to become frustrated by traffic or delays or other people,
Parking,
Yet,
Beneath those inconveniences exists an incredible privilege,
The ability to move through the world with relative ease.
Take a moment to appreciate the freedom that transportation provides you.
Now think of your phone,
Something many of us touch dozens or even hundreds of times a day.
Notice how often it becomes associated with stress,
Notifications,
Emails,
News,
Yet beneath all of that is something pretty remarkable.
The ability to instantly hear the voice of someone you care about.
To see a photograph of a cherished memory,
To learn something new,
To find directions,
To connect across the world,
To reach help when you need it.
Imagine explaining this technology to someone living just a few generations ago.
Allow yourself to appreciate just how remarkable this is.
Now bring awareness to your home.
Whether it's large or small,
Temporary or permanent,
Notice the shelter around you.
Walls,
Windows,
A place to rest,
A place to sleep,
A place to gather,
A place to return to at the end of your day,
And take a moment to appreciate the feeling of being protected from the the elements,
The wind,
Extreme temperatures to have safety and comfort.
Now expand your awareness even further and consider electricity,
Light appearing with the flip of a switch,
Heat,
Cooling,
Refrigeration,
The countless systems working quietly in the background.
So much of modern life depends on things that we rarely think about until they stop working.
Today,
Simply notice them.
Appreciate them.
Now bring to mind the people who make your life possible.
Not only family and friends,
But also strangers.
The person who stocks the shelves at the local market,
Person who repairs the roads,
The person who delivers your packages,
Maintains the power lines,
Grows the food,
Design the systems that you use every single day.
Notice how interconnected we all are and how much support surrounds us often unseen.
As gratitude deepens,
Notice that appreciation does not require perfection.
Life may still contain challenges,
Losses,
Uncertainty,
Responsibility.
Gratitude isn't pretending that everything is just right and perfect.
It's recognizing that even within an imperfect life,
There can be countless gifts.
Quiet comforts and moments of ease,
Acts of support,
Opportunities that become invisible through familiarity.
Now bring awareness to the fact that so much of what enriches your life today was something you might have wished for.
Something even your ancestors could only dream of or never even imagine.
Take a slow breath in.
And silently say to yourself,
Thank you.
Breathing out thank you and again breathing in thank you for this breath Breathing out,
Thank you for this moment.
Breathing in,
Thank you for what supports me.
Breathing out,
Thank you for what I often overlook.
As this meditation comes to a close,
Imagine carrying this awareness in your heart into the rest of your day.
When water flows from a faucet,
You'll notice it.
When you prepare a meal,
You'll think about that.
Maybe when you drive somewhere,
When you call someone you care about,
You switch on a light and take a bite of fresh food.
All these moments to become a pause and a gentle reminder of gratitude.
Opportunities to just notice and appreciate.
Remember that an ordinary day is often filled with extraordinary gifts.
Take another deep breath in.
And gently exhale.
When you're ready,
Bring your awareness back into the space around you.
Gently open your eyes.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and just notice all those wonderful,
Remarkable gifts around you.
Thank you so much for listening.
