Today’s practice is based on the well-known Serenity Prayer, written in the 1930s by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. We will be reciting a series of affirmations that were inspired by Niebuhr’s wise words. Feel free to listen while you are seated, reclined, or taking a peaceful walk.

Welcome.

Today's practice is based on the well-known prayer called the Serenity Prayer.

The most popular version begins with the word God,

But since some people might prefer terms like higher power,

Spirit,

Source,

Intuition,

Love,

Universe,

Or some other being,

I'm going to read the prayer without addressing any deity so you can connect to it in any way that feels right for you.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference.

Such wise words,

Because when we accept the things we cannot change,

And change the things we can,

We have more serenity.

In a moment,

I'll be guiding you in a series of affirmations using the serenity prayer as our guide.

So let's begin by tuning into your body breathing.

Simply following a few breaths all the way in and out.

Give your neck and shoulders permission to relax.

See if you can relax your forehead.

And your eyes.

And your jaw.

And you can repeat after me silently or out loud.

I accept the things I cannot change.

I have courage to change the things I can.

I have wisdom to know the difference.

I accept the things I cannot change.

I change the things I can change.

I have wisdom to know the difference.

I accept what I can't change.

I change what I can.

I know the difference.

I accept what is.

I change what I can.

I release the rest.

I accept myself for who I am.

I change what I can.

I accept what is out of my hands.

I change what I am able to change.

I know the difference.

I accept reality.

I let go of what is out of my hands.

I welcome serenity.

I have courage and wisdom.

I welcome serenity.

I have courage and wisdom.

Good.

Now gently bring yourself back to your body breathing.

Following a few breaths all the way in and out.

Notice any sounds you hear.

If you'd like you can give your body a little stretch.

I hope you'll continue to keep these wise words and concepts in your mind and heart.

Accepting the things we cannot change,

Changing the things we can,

And having the wisdom to know the difference.

Simple words yet profoundly life changing.

Thank you so much for joining me today.
