Welcome to your meditation practice.
Today we will be doing a visualization and exploring our feelings of resentment and surrender.
To begin,
Find a comfortable position,
Either sitting with your spine straight or laying down.
Pay attention to your breathing.
Breathing in and breathing out.
As you are breathing,
Allow your eyes to close gently or gaze softly at the floor.
Take a moment to notice the weight of your body against the chair or the weight of your body on your bed.
Feel the support beneath you.
Return your attention back to your breath.
Notice the cool air entering your nostrils.
And the warm air leaving.
Breathing in and breathing out.
As you breathe,
Remind yourself.
Feelings are not permanent states.
They are currents.
Just as water flows,
Emotions move through us.
We have the capacity to feel heavy,
Stuck emotions.
But we also have the exact same capacity to feel light,
Expansive ones.
The mechanism is the same.
Only the emotion changes.
Let's start with three deep breaths.
Inhale,
Inviting stillness.
Exhale,
Releasing tension.
Inhale,
Opening the heart space.
Exhale,
Softening your shoulders.
Inhale,
And exhale.
Let your mind settle.
You are safe here.
You are present.
You are ready to explore the landscape of your feelings.
Bring to mind a moment when you felt a deep,
Genuine sense of happiness or love.
Perhaps it was a quiet morning with coffee,
A laugh shared with a friend,
Or a moment of connection with nature.
Notice how that feeling felt in your body.
Was it warm,
Light,
Expansive?
Did your chest feel open?
Now bring to mind a moment of pure joy.
Really try to access that sensation.
Feel the warmth in your chest again.
Notice that your nervous system knows exactly how to do this.
Your body remembers how to feel love.
Your heart knows how to expand.
Take a deep breath in,
Imagining you are breathing in that warmth of love.
Exhale,
Letting it settle into your cells.
I am capable of feeling love.
I am capable of feeling connection.
I am capable of feeling love.
I am capable of feeling connection.
Continue to hold on to that feeling.
Notice the warmth in your chest and how it feels to experience pure joy.
Gently shift your awareness.
Without judgment,
Bring to mind a person or a situation that you have held a resentment toward.
It might be someone who hurt you,
Someone who disappointed you,
Or a situation that feels unfair.
Notice what happens in your body when you think of them.
Do you feel a tightening in the stomach,
A clenching in the jaw,
A heaviness in your chest?
Observe these sensations.
This is the physical signature of resentment.
It is the body holding on to a story of wrongness.
Acknowledge the pain.
It is real.
The anger is real.
The frustration is real.
You don't need to push it away.
Just say to yourself,
I see this resentment.
I see how it makes me feel angry,
Frustrated,
And discontent.
Now look closely at the energy of this feeling.
It is heavy.
It is consuming.
It is taking up space in your mind and in your body.
It is demanding your attention.
Remember what we discovered in the first part of our practice today.
This is just a feeling.
It is just a current.
It is not who you are.
It is something you are experiencing,
Not something you are made of.
Hold this resentment in your awareness,
But imagine placing it on a table in front of you.
You are observing it.
You are not drowning in it.
I feel this resentment,
And I know I can also feel love.
These two things can exist,
But I choose where to place my focus.
Notice the contrast.
On one side,
The tightness of the resentment.
On the other,
The memory of the warmth of love.
Which one serves you?
Which one allows you to let go?
The resentment keeps you tied to the past.
The love connects you to the present.
Bring the image of the person you resent back into your mind.
Usually when we resent someone,
We wish for them to suffer,
Or we wish for them to understand our pain,
Or we wish for them to pay for what they did.
We want them to feel the weight of what we feel.
In our practice today,
We are going to try something different.
We are going to use that same capacity for feeling to wish them well.
Imagine this person.
See their face,
And silently say to yourself,
Just as I am capable of feeling happiness,
You are too.
Just as I can feel love,
You can feel love.
May you find peace.
May you find happiness.
May you be free from the suffering that drives you to cause pain.
May you find peace.
May you find happiness.
May you be free from the suffering that drives you to cause pain.
May you be free from the suffering that drives you to cause pain.
This is not about saying what they did was okay.
It is not about excusing their behavior.
It is about freeing yourself from the prison of their actions.
When you wish them happiness,
You are breaking the chain of resentment.
You are saying,
I will not let your actions dictate my emotional state anymore.
Visualize them smiling.
Visualize them at peace.
Visualize them feeling the same warmth you felt earlier.
It might feel strange at first.
It might feel impossible.
That is okay.
Just hold the intention.
I release you.
I release myself.
May we both be happy.
I release you.
I release myself.
May we both be happy.
Feel the shift in your own body.
As you wish them well,
Notice if the tightness in your chest begins to loosen.
Notice if the anger softens into something lighter.
You are reclaiming your power.
You are choosing love over the story of the victim.
Bring your awareness to the concept of surrender.
In the 12 steps,
We speak of turning our will and our lives over to the care of a higher power.
But on a human level,
Surrender simply means letting go of the need to control the outcome.
It means admitting that holding on to this resentment is too heavy a burden to carry alone.
Reflect on this.
What can I surrender today?
Is it the need to be right?
Is it the need for an apology that may never come?
Is it the need to punish the past?
Place your hand over your heart.
Say silently,
I surrender my resentment.
I surrender my need to control this person or this situation.
I surrender the story that I am a victim.
I admit that I am powerless over the past and that my life has become unmanageable.
As long as I hold this bitterness,
I am willing to let it go.
I trust that there is a higher power that can handle this for me.
Visualize the resentment dissolving.
Imagine it turning into mist,
Drifting away on a gentle breeze.
Feel the space that opens up inside you.
This space is where love lives.
This space is where connection lives.
Carry this feeling of lightness with you.
Remember,
You have the power to re-feel.
Whenever the old story of resentment tries to return,
You can choose to re-feel the love.
You can choose to surrender.
You are free.
Let's close our practice today with three deep breaths.
Inhale peace.
Exhale release.
Inhale love.
Exhale forgiveness.
Inhale freedom.
Exhale the past.
Move your attention back to your breath.
Inhale and exhale.
Slowly return your attention back to your body.
Wiggle your fingers and your toes.
Become aware of your surroundings.
And when you are ready,
Open your eyes.
Thank you for sharing your practice with me today.
Remember that you can return to this meditation any time that there is a resentment that you need to work on.
Wishing you love,
Light,
And peace.
Namaste.
