Welcome to another bedtime story.
This one is called Ruby and the Quiet Nature Walk.
Ruby the rabbit was in her burrow.
It was warm and safe in there.
But Ruby did not feel safe inside herself.
Because her thoughts kept hopping around too fast.
What if something goes wrong?
What if I can't sleep?
What if I feel like this forever?
Ruby curled into a tight ball.
I don't like this feeling,
She whispered to herself.
Outside the burrow,
Two friends were waiting in the soft night.
They were about to go on a nature walk.
They were Toby the turtle and Olive the owl.
Toby moved slowly,
As always.
Very slowly.
Like he had nowhere he needed to be.
Olive blinked gently in the moonlight.
I think Ruby is awake,
She said.
Toby nodded.
Let's invite her.
Olive stepped carefully to the burrow entrance.
Ruby,
She called softly.
Would you like to come for a walk?
After a moment,
Ruby peered out of the burrow.
I don't feel okay,
She said.
My thoughts are too loud.
Toby nodded slowly.
That's alright,
He said.
You can still come.
Ruby frowned.
I don't think walking will help.
Olive smiled.
Then let's just try noticing things.
That's what helps me when my thoughts are too loud.
Ruby hesitated,
But then she stepped out.
The night air was cool against her skin.
The three friends began to walk.
Toby was in front,
Moving at his usual slow pace.
Ruby sighed.
You're so slow,
Toby.
But Toby didn't hurry.
I know,
He said calmly.
Being slow helps me to pay attention to what is around me.
There's nothing wrong with taking your time,
Ruby.
Ruby wasn't sure what that meant,
But she followed anyway.
The three friends stopped in a meadow.
First,
Olive said softly,
Let's just take a moment to look around.
So Ruby looked around.
Grass was moving gently in the wind.
Moonlight was shining on leaves.
Shadows were stretching all across the ground.
I see it,
Ruby said quietly.
Good.
Now listen,
Toby said.
So Ruby stopped.
At first,
She could only hear the noise inside her head.
But then slowly,
As she really listened,
As she really paid attention,
She could hear the rustling of grass,
A distant night insect chirping away,
And the soft wind moving through the trees.
I hear it,
Ruby said.
They walked a little further.
Ruby glanced at Toby again.
You really don't hurry,
Do you,
Toby?
Ruby said.
Toby nodded.
When I hurry,
He said,
I miss the world I'm already in.
Ruby thought about that.
The three friends reached a small forest.
Now feel,
Olive said,
Feel what's around you.
So Ruby stood still.
She felt the ground underneath her paws,
The air on her fur.
She felt her breathing a little slower now.
I can feel it,
She said.
The thoughts were still there,
But something was different.
They weren't bothering her as much anymore.
Ruby sat down in the grass.
I still feel a little bit scared,
She said.
Toby sat beside her.
That's okay,
He said.
Olive added gently,
Our thoughts are often not about real things.
So let us see what is real right now.
Ruby looked around again.
The grass was real.
The night was real.
The quiet world was real.
And in this moment,
Nothing was actually wrong.
Nothing was happening that needed fixing.
Ruby breathed out.
I do feel a little better,
She said.
Toby smiled and nodded.
When we notice what is here,
He said,
Our thoughts don't feel so big.
The three friends stayed there for a while,
Not talking much,
Just being in the night.
Just paying attention to what is real.
Eventually,
Ruby stood up.
I think I'm ready to go back,
She said.
So the three friends walked back slowly.
Toby still in front,
Still unhurried.
But Ruby didn't mind his slowness anymore.
It felt calm and steady.
Back at the burrow,
Ruby paused.
Will my thoughts come back?
She asked quietly.
Olive looked at her kindly.
Thoughts will always come and go,
Ruby,
She said.
But you can always come back here,
Right here,
By noticing what is real around you.
Ruby nodded.
Then she curled back into her burrow.
The night was still there.
The world was still there.
And the thoughts were much quieter now.
As Ruby's eyes closed,
She didn't try to push anything away.
She simply noticed.
She noticed the warmth of her burrow,
The safety of the walls,
And the quiet of the night.
And sleep came by itself.
Thank you for listening.
Good night.
