This session is part of The Recovery Solution, a structured, course-like series for burnout and chronic stress recovery. Find the first track of the series here: Overwhelmed By Stress Tools? Start Here (Step 1 Of Recovery) In this session, we explore why rest often feels difficult or unsafe during chronic stress. Instead of pushing toward relaxation, we look at the inner dynamics that make pausing hard, and why permission to rest is the real starting point of recovery.

Hello,

My name is Inge and this is step three of the recovery solution.

An integrated plan for burnout and chronic stress recovery.

In this session,

We'll focus on what I consider the real starting point of recovery.

Permission to pause.

Most methods start right away with teaching you tools.

I use a tool,

Internal family systems,

To first create permission to pause in your system.

What do I mean by that?

Most of us already know we need rest.

You don't need me to tell you that sleep matters.

Perhaps you're even wearing a wrist device that tells you that you are depleted.

And yet,

When the day is finally over,

Do you truly rest?

Rest itself has quietly become another item on the to-do list.

So the real question isn't whether you need rest.

It's also not what kind of rest you need.

And it's not how to schedule it.

The real question is,

Do you actually feel allowed to pause?

Or are you pressuring yourself into rest,

Creating an unconscious resistance to it,

Or unaware that part of you operates under the underlying assumption that if you rest,

Your system will collapse?

From an internal family systems perspective,

Taking rest is rarely about willpower and all about which part is hijacking your system.

Many of us have parts inside that don't trust slowing down.

Parts that believe stopping means falling behind or disappointing others or losing control.

These parts of us often developed at a time when staying alert or pleasing or productive or strong was necessary.

They're not a problem.

They're trying to protect you.

But they are operating with assumptions that no longer hold.

They need an update.

Permission to pause is not a mindset shift.

It is a relational shift inside your system.

When you take a moment to notice these protective parts and relate to them with curiosity instead of resistance,

Something changes.

They soften.

They realize that they don't have to work as hard.

They become aware that there is a grown,

Competent and compassionate you.

Namely,

Your authentic self that is able to lead the system.

And when that realization happens,

Space opens up.

Hardworking parts soften because they are no longer alone in trying to survive.

And in that space,

The nervous system can downshift.

And breathwork can actually do its work,

Which is to relax the body.

In the next session,

We will work with this directly through a short internal guided check-in combined with a very simple breathing practice that helps the body settle.

For now,

I want you to notice this.

If rest feels hard,

You're not broken.

You're not doing it wrong.

You might just not have permission yet.

Thank you for listening.

I'm looking forward to our next practice together.
