What Is Nervous System Regulation?
Nervous system regulation is a phrase that is often used in therapy, mindfulness, and trauma-informed practice, but what does it actually mean? In this short introductory video, I explore how our nervous system responds to stress and why regulation is about more than simply trying to stay calm. You'll gain a clearer understanding of how the body learns safety and discover why small moments of connection and awareness can make a difference.

Hi,
I'm Katrina Duttoni.
I'm a Gestalt psychotherapist,
EMDR practitioner and creator here on Insight Timer.
Much of my work focuses on trauma,
Anxiety,
Self-compassion and helping people reconnect with themselves through greater awareness of the body and nervous system.
Today I'd like to spend a couple of minutes exploring a phrase you may have heard a lot recently.
Nervous system regulation.
It's a phrase that's become really popular over the last few years.
You might have heard it on social media,
In therapy,
Or on meditation apps,
And wondered what people actually mean by it.
Many people assume that nervous system regulation means learning how to feel calm all the time,
But that's not really the goal.
Our nervous system is designed to respond to what's happening around us.
Is something feels threatening,
Stressful,
Overwhelming or unfamiliar?
Our body will often react automatically.
We might feel anxious,
Tense,
Restless,
Irritable,
Overwhelmed,
Or even numb and disconnected.
And in many ways,
That's your nervous system doing exactly what it's designed to do.
It's trying to protect you.
The problem comes when our system gets stuck in a state of high alert,
Even when the danger has passed.
We may find ourselves constantly braced for something to go wrong,
Struggling to switch off.
Finding it hard to rest or feeling overwhelmed by situations that others seem to cope with more easily.
Nervous system regulation is about helping the body recognize moments of safety again,
And importantly,
This isn't about forcing yourself to relax.
It's not about telling yourself to calm down.
It's about gently offering your body experiences that help it feel more settled and supported.
For one person that might be slowing their breathing.
For someone else,
It might be noticing their feet on the floor.
Listening to birdsong,
Walking in nature.
Connecting with a trusted friend.
Or simply pausing to notice what is happening in the present moment.
Over time,
These small moments can help the nervous system become more flexible.
You still experience stress,
You still experience difficult emotions.
But you may find that you're able to move through them more easily and return to a sense of balance more quickly.
So perhaps one of the most important things to know is that nervous system regulation isn't about becoming calm all the time.
It's about helping your body to learn that it doesn't need to stay in survival mode all of the time.
And if you've ever struggled to calm down despite trying really hard.
There may be nothing wrong with you.
Your nervous system may simply be doing what it's learned to do in order to protect you.
Thank you for listening.
And go gently.
