A gentle pause for anxiety.
Welcome.
If you're listening to this it may be because something inside feels unsettled right now.
Perhaps your mind is racing,
Your body feels tight or there's a sense of urgency that won't quite switch off.
For the next few minutes nothing needs to be solved.
This is simply a small space to pause.
So let's begin by noticing your body.
Feel the support beneath you,
Whether you're sitting,
Standing or lying down.
Just notice that something is holding you right now and gently bring your attention to your breath.
You don't need to change it,
Just notice the rhythm of breathing in and breathing out.
Now,
If it feels comfortable,
Allow the out-breath to become just a little longer than the in-breath.
Breathing in and slowly breathing out.
Again,
Breathing in and softening on the out-breath.
Anxiety often makes the body feel as though something urgent is happening but in this moment you are simply here breathing.
See if you can let your shoulders drop just a fraction.
Perhaps your jaw softens,
Your hands rest a little more heavily.
You don't have to force relaxation,
Just allow your body to receive the message that for this moment it can settle.
If your mind begins to jump ahead into worries,
Possibilities or what-ifs,
That's completely natural.
When you notice it,
Gently bring your attention back to something simple,
Your breath,
The feeling of your feet on the floor or the support beneath your body.
Each time you return,
You're helping your nervous system remember that it doesn't have to stay on high alert.
Take one slightly deeper breath in and a slow steady breath out and another allowing the exhale to release a little of the tension you may have been carrying.
Now,
Before we finish,
Just notice how your body feels compared with a few minutes ago.
You don't have to feel completely calm,
Even the smallest shift is enough.
Your nervous system is allowed to settle in small steps.
Whenever anxiety rises again,
You can return to this simple pause,
A breath,
A moment of support beneath you,
A reminder that your body knows how to come back to balance.
And when you're ready,
Gently bring your awareness back to the space around you and continue with your day,
One breath at a time.
Go gently.
