Before a difficult conversation,
Your body often reacts as if it's under threat.
Your breathing becomes faster,
Your heart rate rises,
Your thinking narrows.
That's not weakness,
That's physiology.
In the next five minutes,
We're going to regulate your nervous system so that you can enter this conversation steady,
Clear and composed.
Find a comfortable seated position,
Feet on the floor,
Spine tall but relaxed.
Gently close your mouth,
We'll breathe just through the nose.
Phase 1,
Let's downshift the system.
Take a slow breath in through your nose for four seconds.
And a slow breath out your nose for six.
Again,
In for four.
And out for six.
Let the exhale be soft,
Unforced,
Controlled.
Continue in that rhythm,
In for four,
Out for six.
Now for Phase 2,
Reducing the volume.
Slightly reduce the volume of your breathing.
Put your hand on your tummy and feel it move in and out.
Or pretend there is a feather underneath your nose.
Try not to disturb the feather and make your tummy movement smaller.
Inhale gently through the nose,
Exhale slowly.
Keep the breath smooth,
No gulping,
No pushing,
No straining.
Imagine the breath moving low into the lungs,
Minimal chest lift.
Calm body,
Calm breath.
If your mind wanders to the upcoming conversation,
It's okay.
Just return to the breath.
In through the nose,
Out through the nose.
Quiet,
Controlled.
Phase 3,
Let's build some composure.
We'll add a short pause after the exhale.
Breathe in for four.
Breathe out for six.
And pause gently for two,
Before your next inhale.
No strain,
Just a brief stillness.
Remember,
Inhale for four,
Exhale for six,
And pause for two.
The pause builds tolerance to pressure.
It teaches your system that you are in control.
Continue at your own pace,
Slow,
Quiet,
Steady.
Return to normal breathing.
Notice your heart rate.
Notice your shoulders.
Notice your thoughts.
You've just shifted from reactive to regulated.
When you enter this conversation,
You don't need to force calm.
Your body is already there.
Remember,
When not speaking,
Mouth is closed.
Nasal breathing,
Slow,
Steady tone,
Clear thinking.
You're ready.
