Welcome.
If you're listening to this,
There may be something from today that's still lingering.
Something unfinished,
Something you wish had gone differently,
Or simply the quiet pressure to have done more.
Tonight we're not going to push harder or try to fix anything.
Instead,
We're going to gently practice letting go.
This meditation is an invitation to set down what you've been carrying,
Your to-do list,
Your self-judgments,
The weight of expectations,
And instead,
Meet yourself with kindness.
Remember,
You don't have to earn your rest.
There's nothing that you need to do in order to deserve sleep.
For the next few minutes,
You are allowed to soften.
For our time together,
You are allowed to be human.
And you are allowed to be enough,
Exactly as you are.
Take a slow,
Gentle breath in,
And an even slower breath out.
Let your body settle into whatever is holding you right now.
The mattress,
The pillow,
The weight of the blankets.
There is nowhere else that you need to be,
Nothing else that you need to do.
You are here,
And this moment is enough.
As your body begins to soften,
I want to gently acknowledge something.
If you're like many people,
Nighttime can be when the mind starts reviewing the day.
The unfinished tasks,
The things you meant to say differently,
That email you didn't get to send,
The tone you wish you'd adjusted,
Or that list that still isn't complete.
So before we try to relax more deeply,
Let's gently turn towards what you're still holding.
Not to fix it,
Not to solve it,
Just to notice.
Bring to mind one thing,
Just one,
That feels unfinished,
Or heavy,
Or unresolved from today.
Let it be simple.
Notice what comes up first.
And now,
Instead of judging yourself for it,
See if you can simply name it.
This is something I didn't finish.
This is something I'm replaying.
This is something I wish I'd done differently.
This is mindfulness.
Just seeing clearly what is here,
Without exaggerating or minimizing,
And just noticing.
Now gently notice what happens in your body as you think about this.
Is there a tightness somewhere,
A heaviness,
A buzzing in the chest or clenching in your jaw or stomach?
Place a hand there if that feels supportive,
And just breathe.
Now I want you to imagine something.
Imagine that all the things you carried today,
Every responsibility,
Every expectation,
Every internal pressure.
Imagine all of those things have been sitting in a backpack on your shoulders,
A heavy one.
Maybe you've been carrying it for so long,
You forgot it was even there.
Picture yourself gently sliding that backpack off your shoulders.
Feel the straps loosen.
Feel the weight shift.
Hear it hitting the ground.
You can set it down right beside your bed.
We're not throwing it away or pretending it doesn't exist.
We're just setting it down.
You are allowed to rest,
Even if everything isn't done.
Take a slow breath in.
And as you exhale,
Feel your shoulders drop just a little bit more.
Feel your jaw relax.
You did what you could today with the time,
The energy,
The emotional bandwidth that you had,
And that matters.
Now let's bring in the second element of self-compassion,
Common humanity.
You are not the only person lying in bed right now thinking about what's unfinished or judging themselves.
There are millions of people reviewing their day,
Wishing they'd done more,
Wishing they'd been more patient,
Wishing they'd gotten further.
This is such a part of being human.
Not failing.
Human.
You are not uniquely behind.
You are not uniquely flawed.
You are a person with limits,
Just like I am.
And limits are not weaknesses.
They're a part of being alive.
Now gently notice if there's any judgment present.
Maybe a voice that says,
You should have handled that better.
You're falling behind.
You're not doing enough.
Instead of fighting that voice,
See if you can recognize it as a part of you that is trying to motivate,
Trying to protect,
Or trying to prevent failure.
It may be harsh,
But it likely believes that it's helping you.
And now,
From a softer place inside of you,
Respond.
You might say,
Thank you for trying to help,
But I don't need criticism right now.
I just need rest.
And now we move into self-kindness.
Place a hand over your heart,
Or give yourself a gentle hug,
And say silently or softly,
I did enough for today.
I am allowed to stop.
I am allowed to be imperfect.
I can begin again tomorrow.
Notice how these words land,
Not forcing them to feel true,
Just letting them wash over you and see what resonates,
And maybe what you resist.
Now return to that image of the backpack beside your bed.
See it resting there.
The tasks,
The conversations,
The expectations.
They'll still be there tomorrow,
But for tonight,
They don't need you.
Tonight,
Your only job is to rest.
Feel the bed holding you.
Feel gravity supporting you.
Your body knows how to sleep when it feels safe enough.
And right now,
You are safe enough.
If your mind wanders back to the list,
Gently imagine placing the thought inside the backpack,
Zipping it closed,
And setting it back down.
You can do that as many times as needed,
Without feeling frustration towards yourself.
Just continue to practice.
Take one more slow breath in.
And as you exhale,
Imagine your whole body softening,
Even by 5%.
That's enough.
You don't have to force relaxation.
Just allow a little more ease.
You are so much more than what you accomplished today.
You are more than your expectations.
Your worth does not rise and fall with your productivity.
Tonight,
You get to simply exist.
And that is enough.
Let your breath become gentle and natural now.
Let your body grow heavier.
And if sleep comes,
Let it come.
If it takes time,
That's okay too.
There's nothing to achieve here.
You did enough today.
And now,
You rest.
Thank you so much for listening.
Sleep well.
