Hello,
Welcome back.
My name is Pratika.
This reflection,
Which is called What is Anxious?
Is not an invitation to overcome anxiety.
Or to fight with it.
Or even to understand it intellectually.
Instead,
It is an invitation to become quietly curious.
To look a little more deeply at what is actually taking place.
When anxiety appears.
There is nothing to force,
Nothing to believe.
Only a gentle willingness to notice what is already here.
And perhaps through looking carefully,
Something simple and deeply freeing may reveal itself.
When anxiety arises,
It can seem as though it belongs to someone.
Someone who was worried,
Someone who was uncertain.
Someone who feels responsible for holding life together.
And yet,
Before accepting this assumption,
Let us pause.
And look a little more closely.
What is it that is actually anxious?
A sensation may be present in the body.
Thoughts may be moving quickly.
Images of the future may appear.
Memories may arise.
But all of these are being noticed.
They are known.
The question is not whether anxiety appears,
But to whom does it appear?
Most of us have spent our lives assuming that the anxious thoughts,
Feelings,
And sensations belong to a separate self,
A personal me.
A character with a history.
A character with fears and hopes.
A character constantly trying to become safe,
Certain.
Or complete.
This character can feel very real.
Its story may have been repeated for many years.
Yet,
When we look carefully,
Is this character anything more than a collection of thoughts?
Memories,
Beliefs,
Behaviours,
Conditioning.
All appearing within awareness.
The body may experience tension.
The mind may imagine future outcomes.
Emotions may move through the system.
Yet none of these need to be denied.
None of it needs to be pushed away.
Quietly,
All of it is being known.
And that which knows it.
Remains unchanged.
Thoughts are known,
Feelings are known,
Sensations are known.
Even the sense of being a separate person is known.
Yet the knower itself is never seen as an object.
It cannot be found,
Because it is that which is looking.
It is that which is aware.
Is anxiety happening to what you truly are?
Or is anxiety appearing within that which you truly are?
There is a profound difference between these two ways of seeing.
One creates struggle.
The other opens the door to freedom.
Not because anxiety has been defeated.
Not because the body has been fixed.
But because there is a recognition that what you are is already present.
Before every thought,
Every emotion.
Every feeling of anxiety.
And every passing experience.
The anxious character may continue to appear.
Condition patterns of the nervous system may continue to unfold.
Life may continue exactly as it is.
Yet,
Something essential has been seen.
What you are.
What you are is not the movement.
You are that in which the movement appears.
And in that recognition,
There is a quiet invitation to rest.
Not as the character.
Not as the story.
But as the timeless awareness in which all experience comes and goes.
And now a final reflection.
Nothing new has been added.
Nothing needed to be.
What has always been present.
Has simply been recognised.
Thoughts will continue to arise.
Feelings will continue to move.
The body will continue to respond to life,
Yet,
As it always has,
Anxiety may still appear.
Moments of uncertainty may still come.
Yet,
Awareness itself remains still.
Untouched.
It does not become anxious.
As the knower,
It simply knows whatever appears.
So when anxiety next arises,
There is no need to immediately ask.
How do I make this go away?
A quieter question.
May reveal far more.
What is it?
That is silently aware of this experience.
There is no need to search for an answer.
Simply remain with the knowing itself.
Rest as the silent presence in which all experience comes and goes.
Thank you for being here.
May this quiet recognition continue to unfold gently in the midst of everyday life.
Blessings to you.
