Nothing needs to change right now.
Take a moment to quietly pause and relax.
Now take a long deep breath.
You are not here to improve anything,
Nor to achieve a particular state of mind.
Just be here and be present.
So often in meditation teachings there is an early pointing to focus,
To become calmer,
Quieter,
Stiller in the body and mind.
To shift thoughts into something other than what is current.
For the next few minutes put all aside,
Nothing needs to change.
Remain just as you are,
With your thoughts,
With your breathing,
With your mood.
You are aware of being fully here.
Now gently notice the weight of your body,
The way it meets the chair as you sit or the cushion on the floor.
If you need to adjust slightly for comfort,
Do so and then allow the body to be still right where it is.
Notice also your breath as it is already here.
No need to deepen it,
No need to slow it down.
The body is breathing by itself and you are quietly aware of this.
All is naturally open and free.
Perhaps there are sounds around you,
Let them come and go,
Rise and fall.
Include them all.
And if thoughts are present,
Let them be present.
There is no requirement here for anything other than what is.
If restlessness is here,
It simply is.
If calmness is being felt,
That too is as it is.
Even uncertainty,
Even distraction,
All are quietly acknowledged in this open space of awareness.
If thoughts take you in a particular direction,
Acknowledge that.
If memories arise,
From times gone by,
Acknowledge that too.
You are here naturally yourself,
Relaxed.
Again,
Nothing is required of you,
Nothing is being asked.
All is perfect,
Just as it is.
Observe the natural flow of the breath,
The comfort felt in the body,
The hands lightly resting in your lap.
All is naturally present.
In this moment,
The body does not need to become more relaxed,
The mind does not need to become more still.
All is effortlessly unfolding here,
In the moment of being aware.
For now,
Rest without purpose or agenda.
No improving,
No correcting,
No reaching for a better experience.
Just this as it is,
Exactly as you are.
Now as we come towards the end of this exercise,
Notice that awareness does not belong exclusively to meditation.
At any point in your day,
You can reconnect with your awareness.
Now take another long,
Deep,
Relaxed breath.
Be still,
Be here and aware.
Now gently,
In your own time,
As this exercise comes to a closure,
Allow movement and sensation to return to the body.
Move your fingers and toes,
Be here,
Aware.
Now carry this same natural awareness with you,
Wherever you may be.
