When the sense of me softens.
Sit comfortably so you are relaxed and breathing as you normally would.
There is no effort here,
Everything as it is.
Now gently introduce the thought,
I am the person I believe myself to be.
Not the details,
Just the felt sense of being someone inside a body.
Pause for a moment.
And now,
Very honestly,
Feel what it takes to be this person.
There is no rush here.
Perhaps you notice an inner narrative,
One of constant self-referencing.
How am I doing?
What do people see me as?
Why do I feel like this?
Will others approve of me?
Can I trust them?
That doesn't feel right to me.
Notice in the background the energy and effort it takes to hold yourself together.
Maintaining a self-image,
Planning for the future,
Laying down the guidelines.
Even when nothing dramatic is happening,
There can be a low hum of self-concern.
A subtle energy,
A quiet tension in the chest,
With a mind that is constantly alert on simmer.
This is the exhaustion of self-maintenance.
Not necessarily loud,
Not always conscious,
But often continuous.
The nervous system learns this pattern.
It learns from your self-referencing,
Guarded responses.
It braces,
Not because life is threatening,
But because the energy of identity can make you feel vulnerable.
Pause for a moment.
Let the body feel the weight of this.
Take a moment.
Now without trying to fix or improve anything,
Stop referencing the believed self.
Just for this moment.
No self-image to support,
No ambitions to fulfill,
No internal dialogue continually evaluating.
Simply be here,
Still and aware.
You notice the body is breathing on its own.
The heart is beating without a thought.
Sounds are arising.
Life is unfolding without direction,
Without a separate self managing it.
Notice what happens in the body when you are not self-focused.
When there is nothing personal to defend or to define.
Can you feel the background hum soften?
Can you feel the breath naturally deepen?
Can you feel the mind change gear,
Begin to slow down?
When the sense of me is not being actively upheld,
The nervous system's hyper-vigilance begins to settle.
Not because you forced calm,
But because nothing is being personally held onto.
Right now,
Without your name,
Without your history,
Without your self-description,
Is anything missing?
Be honest here.
Is there now simply an open,
Spacious awareness?
A sense of lightness?
A quietness?
A relaxation of settling back into a calm stillness?
Awareness is not mysterious.
It is simple,
Spontaneous,
Open,
Free,
Impersonal,
Uncomplicated.
When identity is not being tightly held onto,
The body and the nervous system once again recognize a natural rested state.
Body rhythms appear again.
A sense of well-being and harmony can return,
Light and effortless.
In daily life,
The person will still appear.
Your name is respected.
Your roles will continue.
Responsibilities remain.
Nothing outward seems to have changed,
But something has shifted.
All can be felt more clearly,
More discerningly now.
A steady overall calmness rather than anxiety or restlessness.
You may begin to notice when the body starts to brace itself around the personal energy of a me and a mine.
In that noticing,
Mental effort is no longer the compass.
All of this is now recognized as a movement within a calm,
Quiet awareness.
The discomfort you were feeling was not in life itself,
But in the effort of holding tightly to the reins,
In the belief of being a separate self.
Within this energetic ripple,
Life and one's nervous system will flow more naturally,
More harmoniously.
The nervous system will begin to regulate more readily,
And the personal character in the play of life can now take a quiet step back,
Letting go of the need to control.
Rest now as what has always been effortlessly here.
Open,
Aware,
And unburdened.
To conclude this meditation,
Take one long,
Slow,
Deep breath.
And then exhale.
Then,
When you are ready,
Gently open your eyes,
And feel again back into the body.
Now,
Go about your day as the presence of calm awareness,
That which one naturally is.
