The Heart is Connected to the Movement of Reality Talk + Meditation
by Tony Samara
In this meditational talk with short breathing focus towards the end, we learn that when things become difficult we may retreat into a space that is negative and confused. Tony Samara guides us to create real happiness and find the depth of meaning in all situations. By closing your eyes, and relaxing the body, you will open yourself to the wisdom that is beyond the mere words. You will also receive an energy transmission that is part of each of Tony Samara's tracks here on Insight Timer.

Just making sure that if you have any technical devices or phones or situations that may disturb you,
That you create a space for yourself now to be totally present to the transmission,
To your own inner wisdom.
Here in the Western culture,
You know,
Where we're used to always reaching out for some sort of goal.
Just creating the space is all that matters.
Creating the space so that activity,
The activity of meditation,
Awareness,
The activity of consciousness has the space to manifest in a very real and tangible way.
Very often people feel very helpless because of the strong and difficult things that may be happening around in the world as an inner experience or as an outer experience in the world.
Very often without knowing it,
Without even being aware,
We tend to begin to retreat away from these difficulties.
It's sort of a reaction,
A natural reaction for human beings of course.
We begin to retreat into a little space inside of ourselves that wants to shut out all those difficulties,
All those challenges and sort of retreat into a comfortable space.
And naturally there is no such space by escaping reality or by sort of negating what is going on and trying to find a better space somewhere.
There is no such space,
But we believe that we've created such a space by sort of creating distance to our experience or sort of separating a little bit from the experience that's happening.
It's a way of not dealing with the situation in a positive way or in a useful way or in a real way.
When we pull away from things in such a manner,
Sometimes we sort of create distance not only to the experience but also to ourselves and to the way that we perceive reality and the way that we somehow connect to the world and connect to the inner world.
Sometimes we create distance to that which is most important and that is our awareness of the situation.
So to change the situation,
It's not really that very,
It's not very useful to retreat into a sort of pretend space of happiness.
It's important to manifest happiness in a real way.
We know that no matter what is happening in the world,
Whatever we read in newspapers or on Google or on the internet,
Watch on TV or listen to in whatever form,
Whatever is happening anywhere in the world or around us,
We know on some level that everything is a gift even though the situations are not so very nice as there are so many not so nice situations happening around.
There is a depth of meaning in the situation.
Now that doesn't justify the situation.
It just means that if we sort of get reactive to the situation or push the situation away so that that depth of meaning in that situation,
Whatever that we're escaping from,
Isn't very clear to the heart,
Then we lose hope.
As individuals we begin to sort of get lost and that sort of confusion becomes a very,
Very real expression of our paradigms,
Of our cultural paradigms that we live by.
It seems like we're all confused and there is this space of confusion that is very much part of whatever is being transmitted in the news or wherever in the way that people are communicating to each other.
There is confusion that leads to reactivity,
That leads to a sort of reactivity because there is a tension around.
The depth of meaning is lost so we can only skim the superficial aspects of what is going on so we experience an overload of information,
Negative information.
Really if we try to create a space of escaping from the experience then we're not really creating a space.
We're reacting by believing that we're creating a space.
We're reacting to a situation by believing that we're creating a space that will shelter us from pain and suffering.
But the space that meditation creates is not an escape from whatever is going on but rather it's a space where we allow for the meditational attitude,
The meditational focus to be very present in whatever is going on.
So when we sit in meditation it doesn't matter what thought you have,
You are in meditation.
You can't escape into a space which sort of escapes from those thoughts that you don't like that are causing you confusion.
You can't sort of say,
No I don't like those thoughts so I want to escape somewhere and this is my meditation because I want to create this little bubble that's separate from all this confusion.
That's not what meditation is about.
Meditation is about changing our attitude and connecting to the heart,
To the heart space so that in our meditation we can expand consciousness so that we are clear and aware of the situation and we are clear and aware enough to put our intention in a space,
In that expansive transcendent space so that that intention becomes the transformation that is necessary,
That deep connection or recognition of meaning in the situation that is necessary so that we come back to the space that the heart loves and that is love or connection itself.
The awareness and experience of love and connection within itself.
So it's not that we are trying to find love but we are experiencing love through our activity and by pulling away from the pain or suffering that the mind perceives then we are sort of somehow empowering that space and forgetting that love is present in everything.
The heart is connected to all and everything in the world.
If you have this dualism,
That's bad,
This is what I want,
This is good,
Then it creates references that very often are part of this perception that our cultural paradigm creates that everything can be seen in that dualistic way.
But what if we turn that upside down,
Which is what meditation practice does?
You know,
What if we turn that upside down and we sort of understand,
It's not just say to ourselves but we really understand that the world around us is not the picture that our mind believes it to be.
It's not the perception that the mind creates of the situation.
What if we could sort of quantum leap into a space of consciousness or awareness where we could see things from a bigger perspective so that the perspective that the mind,
The ego mind perspective that we sort of somehow get very easily caught in is not really as relevant anymore because we are,
We've quantum leapt into the space of transcendence meaning that we can see things and we can see very clearly that there is a meaning to everything and if there is a meaning to everything then somehow everything is moving through the dynamics of,
Through the dynamics of this creative force,
There isn't really a word in English to describe it,
This creative force that isn't really out to create pain or suffering but this creative force is just the movement of reality and it's not limited to the idea that the mind creates this dualistic idea of good and bad.
There is of course situation,
There are situations within the experience that can be conceptualized as not very nice but if we were to step outside of this dualism that the mind is so comfortable creating and somehow look at the situation from just like when you travel in an airplane and you look at the world and you see all these little cars driving as you sort of take off,
You see all these little cars and buses and life seems very funny from that perspective doesn't it,
I always found it very funny sitting in an airplane and looking back at the world and thinking okay I've left everything behind and look at the way everything is moving,
You know the cars and the busyness of a city,
That's what you usually notice as you take off and it's all sort of within,
It's very different than living that experience because you've got a perspective that's very different and that's what creates the incredible possibility for your meditational practice to sort of understand directly.
So it's not that you are physically lifting off into a space that's unknown,
You know like some people believe this transcendent quantum leap into this other space is sort of different,
No,
It's a space you recognize,
The heart recognizes,
It's love that the heart understands,
It's the language that the heart understands in a very sort of mystical way and as you create a distance or a detachment to those things that are creating so-called difficulties in your life or creating all sorts of situations that force you to sort of retreat inside of yourself or even inside of certain concepts,
You know,
The concept of this world is not a nurturing place,
Don't like it,
You know those concepts that we create,
Belief systems that we create inside of ourselves,
We retreat into them every time it's verified that yes the world,
Look I'm in pain again or it's difficult again,
The world isn't treating me nice,
You know and we create this dualistic picture in our minds that force us somehow,
Even if we're not aware that we're doing this,
Force us to retreat into this concept or in this little bubble of fear or in this little bubble of reactive space,
I'm angry with the world because I don't like what's going on or whatever,
But it's not coming back to the heart,
It's coming back to the concept and that concept is what I'm saying,
It's very interesting to watch as you take off in an aeroplane and you sort of look at things from this greater perspective or from this sort of detached perspective,
Everything seems very different than what you thought of those situations when you're in them,
Attached to them,
So the practice of meditation is what helps you to lift off and connect to the awareness that makes you able to see things from this perspective that things aren't as they seem,
When you're detached from what is going on things aren't what they seem to the mind,
At least you know the mind recognises because the way that the brain functions,
The neuroscience of the situation is that the brain now begins to relax and not create this sort of fight or flight situation or let's look at the problem situation,
But is relaxing into the space that you're creating through your meditation practice,
It doesn't mean that everything around you changes,
It doesn't mean that you all of a sudden connect to the truth like some people say and you're free,
It just means that you're more aware of awareness and awareness is more aware of the situation from a very detached perspective,
So in some way that is a very sacred experience,
It's like falling asleep,
You know that's a sacred experience because you are letting go of the mundane and you're experiencing consciousness from a new perspective,
The picture that you hold as reality begins to change as you fall asleep,
It has to otherwise you wouldn't fall asleep and we begin to change things around us,
We begin to change the situation around and because we are falling into sleep so our connection to the world begins to change so we're changing the situations around us because our attachment creates a change,
That is of course what meditational practice does similar to sleep but it's very different from sleep,
It's a type of experience where consciousness begins to recognize itself from a different perspective,
So rather than attach meaning to what is happening around you know the conceptual picture that the mind says okay this is the meaning of my experience because that is the reflection of what is happening,
You begin to recognize the experience of life from a new perspective of consciousness,
You are either asleep so that's a new perspective or you are in deep meditation so that's a new perspective that's very different from that which forces you to retreat into that little space or little concept or little fear or little whatever that very often shuts off the world or the reality of the world and creates a very very obsessive sort of experience,
This is for example if you move into fear this is the world,
The world is fear you know and we identify with that fear and we recreate it and we experience it and we verify it and we feel it and we think about it and we see it in the situations around us and of course it's very that experience is in itself very different from say falling asleep and then the fear is just not relevant you know you're dreaming about I don't know a beautiful garden and you're walking in the garden and you know there are beautiful roses around and you're breathing the beautiful sensations of experience that are being that's being created in your dream the smell of the rose that you touch the rose and that's wonderful and all of a sudden you know the wake up and you think oh that's such a nice dream I didn't even want to wake up to this world you know it's I want to stay in that beautiful space that is consciousness see that is consciousness when we detach from that which separates us and come back to a true meditational practice true transmission that comes from within the heart then doesn't matter what we think doesn't matter what we feel because what we are doing is affirming that we are free in this spacious experience or this creative space that we are now recognizing and connecting to and relating to and as we do this our meditation moves beyond just being detached or aware that there is a greater space of reality than that and that which the mind likes to focus upon we we become aware that we have a choice in the space that is present to us because now we recognize that we detach from one thought or one feeling and we recognize there is so much more than we have a choice because we recognize the more we recognize the potential we recognize the possibility and it's not enough because even if you recognize it still takes a little bit more practice takes the affirmation of intention within the spaciousness that you are now recognizing to move deeper so it's not enough to see the space you have to actually be you have to be somehow active and relate to the space in a very real way so practice is not just recognition practice is practice and so when we begin to move deeper then you know the say the watching of television and somehow obsessive connection to a certain way of thinking becomes less important or if we watch television it becomes just another thing that is happening in our lives not the thing that is happening in our lives if we hear something on the radio it doesn't connect to that belief system say the world is not a nice place it just is another thing happening and we our awareness recognizes that but our awareness is not limited to that and so whatever we do watching tv reading a book or a newspaper listening to other people speak or feeling certain situations or thinking about them becomes less important doesn't mean that they're unimportant but becomes less important in our practice this is why meditation is so very wonderful it's like coming back to a childlike quality that's been forgotten because you've sort of had to do so many things in life that allows for the inner child for that little child inside of you to to forget that it's possible to to be free to free your inner child and to to recognize that through action say playing playing with the situations around you I know this sounds crazy and difficult but we can you know we can interact with the world in a playful creative way one of the ways of doing that is smiling you know even if you don't feel like smiling so you know that's the first thing you know if you're not enjoying the game if you're not enjoying what you're doing the play that you're playing then of course all of a sudden you know you're you're no longer connected to that child you're connected to the adults seeing things in that same way where you want to react to the situation and move into that little space or into that little space inside of yourself or retreat from the world but playing means that you want to explore the world there is a sort of excitement whereby you want to move into the world and experience the world from a new perspective you're in awe of the world so you're not just observing the world you're interacting with the world your being in the world so that's the little child inside of you saying okay this is the world that's the situation let me use my creativity my sense of adventure my sense of excitement my sense of being and transmit this as an intention into the many invisible levels that you may not be aware of but they're there not just into the physical levels of experience but the many invisible levels so that I touch part of myself I touch a part of myself that is so very core it's like a language of excitement okay I am here present to the world and the world is present to me and I can communicate I can I'm in touch with this world through my action through my activity so the heart is excited by the activity not just by the awareness so it's not enough to just be aware we need to sort of be excited in such a way where meditational practice is like wow this space that I'm creating within myself within my heart means that I'm aligning to a space of thinking that is not limited to trying to escape from the difficult things or the painful things I'm sort of willing to move and create more space around me so that that space that I'm creating is part of the game part of the game the play that the little child inside of me sees is very important so that we can learn to recognize our being through action through activity and that is what makes meditation very different than what most people think because most people believe that meditation is a sort of passive activity where you have to somehow like stop things stop thinking stop feeling stop getting caught by this and that but actually as we know in neuroscience meditation activates your brain more than the activity that happens in the brain when you're just doing whatever it is in mundane everyday life your brain through MRI scans is actually more active because there is a sort of coherence that's being created through your activity and the activity is not that you stop experiencing the world but rather your intention is to experience the world in a more profound more powerful more interesting way and we know that in sleep especially during REM sleep it's the same as we touch upon consciousness in our sleep from a very different perspective than that of the mundane as we touch upon consciousness from say REM sleep we know through MRI scans that the brain is very very alive and the neurons are firing and wiring and spaces within the physical structure of the brain begin to become much more active than say when you're stressed or sad or caught and struggling with life then the brain is very used to that experience and is creating a repetitive sort of communication that doesn't require so much brain activity this is why communication means not only that you expand into the space around you and you stop retreating into that little space that you create inside of yourself or you stop creating a belief system or a perception of the world that recreates itself and that repetitive pattern means that what happens is that you all of a sudden stop doing that and you're copan to the possibility the potential of life and that is profoundly important and what makes this type of meditation very different from the meditations that many so many people speak about now because it's so popular meditation is like yoga now you know everyone is speaking about it but very few people truly understand the dynamics of meditation and you know when people say meditation is about sort of creating a little space inside of oneself so that you can retreat into that space away from all the stresses of life that in itself is wrong information because that's absolutely the opposite of what you need to do so it doesn't mean that you have to attach yourself to the stresses or the pains or the sufferings around that you're experiencing but it's very important as just explained now that we move to a space of consciousness without consciousness meditation is a simple exercise of relaxation so as you breathe in and breathe out letting go of the mundane letting go and opening up to the potential that is within this wonderful space that you now begin to explore breathing in and breathing out letting go opening up receptive opening up to the space this creative space that's within that's part of the universe that is the manifestation of all matter all matter even within the dimensions that are invisible to the mind just opening up deep breath and remembering as you open up remembering from deep within the heart that it is consciousness that you're empowering in your experience every breath brings you back to a consciousness that is aware of itself but also that is aware of the very many dimensions of experience that you now begin to explore as you come back to stillness deep breath deep breath you may wish to continue in meditation for a few more moments allowing the space of stillness to expand within yourself around you just being open and receptive to consciousness in such a way where your meditation moves you beyond the worries and the thoughts and feelings about whatever it is that the mind is preoccupied with and just coming back to this point within that is still this point within that is so very still allows you to be receptive and open and in touch with what is going on beyond just the little things that the mind recognizes awareness comes from stillness stillness allows for awareness just breathing in and breathing out allowing this meditation to continue for a few more moments thank you

meditation as ordering thought into coherent consciousness aligned with the heart as opposed to suppressing thought in pursuit of relaxation. Am I correct? Very helpful
