Tony, thank you for this video-assisted reflection on the night sky.
I was in my 30’s by the time I ever saw the Milky Way with my own eyes, not just in books and on TV!
Growing up 50 miles outside NYC, the Milky Way had already been obliterated for years by the time I was born. Even the universities I attended upstate New York were too close to bright cities to see it!
I finally saw it, completely unexpectedly, in the back yard of a house I had just moved into in a rural town in Maryland, which was far enough (then!) from DC, Baltimore and Frederick, the 3 closest light-polluting cities. I was amazed how close it looked! And how beautiful!
Now back on Long Island, most nights a can only see the moon and planets, and, on exceptional nights, a dozen or so stars.
I’m still comforted and bewildered to know there is so much more out there!
Thanks for sharing your similar experience!
