Hi,
This is Julie,
And this is Yoga Nidra for Sleep.
This one is called Shelter in the Storm.
So settle yourself into a comfortable position for rest,
Lying down,
Warm and supported.
And allow the eyes to close gently.
Take a moment to sense the body resting on the earth,
The weight of you being held,
Nothing to do,
Nowhere to go.
Outside,
There may be movement,
Or some weather,
Sound,
But inside,
You are sheltered.
Allow yourself to arrive.
And at this time,
You may gently bring to mind a short intention,
A simple phrase stated in the present tense.
Not something that you need to make happen,
Just something that you are planting.
Perhaps it's,
I am safe to rest.
Or I am held.
Or,
My body knows how to sleep.
State your intention quietly once or twice,
And then let it go.
We'll now move awareness through the body.
You don't need to move or imagine anything,
Simply notice,
Bringing awareness to the right hand,
The thumb,
Index finger,
Middle finger,
Ring finger,
Little finger,
Palm of the hand,
Back of the hand,
Wrist,
Forearm,
Elbow,
Upper arm,
Shoulder,
Right side of the chest,
Waist,
Hip,
Right thigh,
Knee,
Lower leg,
Ankle,
Heel,
Sole of the foot,
Top of the foot,
And all toes of the right foot.
The whole right side of the body resting.
Now bring awareness to the left hand,
Thumb,
Index finger,
Middle finger,
Ring finger,
Little finger,
Palm,
Back of the hand,
Wrist,
Forearm,
Elbow,
Upper arm,
Shoulder,
Left side of the chest,
Waist,
Hip,
Left thigh,
Knee,
Lower leg,
Ankle,
Heel,
Sole of the foot,
Top of the foot,
All toes of the left foot.
The whole left side of the body resting.
And bring awareness to the back of the body,
Back of the head,
Neck,
Shoulders,
Shoulder blades,
Spine resting into the surface beneath you,
Lower back,
Cheeks,
Back of the thighs,
Backs of the knees,
Calves,
Heels,
The entire back body supported.
And bringing awareness to the front of the body,
Forehead,
Eyebrows,
Space between the eyebrows,
Eyes,
Cheeks,
Jaw,
Mouth,
Tongue resting,
Throat,
Collarbones,
Chest,
Upper abdomen,
Lower abdomen,
Hips,
Thighs,
Knees,
Shins,
Tops of the feet,
The whole front of the body softening,
Sensing the entire body at once,
Whole,
Heavy,
At rest,
Like a house standing quietly in the rain.
And now bringing attention to the natural breath,
No need to change it,
Just noticing the breath moving in the body,
Rising and falling.
And as you breathe in,
Feel the breath arriving like fresh air through an open window.
And as you breathe out,
Feel the body settle more deeply into shelter.
And breath by breath,
The body stays inside,
And the storm stays outside.
And perhaps bring to mind the sensation of coolness,
Cool air,
Cool rain,
Fresh and light.
And letting go of coolness and sensing warmth,
Warm blankets,
A warm room,
Warmth spreading throughout the body.
And bringing awareness to sound,
Perhaps the sound of rain or distant thunder,
Shifting your awareness then to silence,
The quiet beneath all sound.
Bringing awareness to effort,
The memory of effort,
Striving,
Doing.
And now effortlessness,
Nothing to manage,
Nothing to hold together.
Effort falls away and rest remains.
Now allow an image to form,
You're inside a place of shelter.
It may be a small cabin,
A cozy room,
A tent,
Or simply a space of warmth and safety.
Outside rain is falling steadily,
Thunder rolls in the distance,
The storm is real but it does not reach you.
You are dry,
You are warm,
You are protected.
And each sound outside reminds the body,
I am safe,
I am inside.
The walls are strong,
The roof holds,
And the body softens.
And allow the storm to move through the world,
You do not need to follow it.
And perhaps gently bringing back your intention,
The same words as before,
Stating them once with ease.
Then allow it to fade in the background,
Like rain fading into sleep.
Begin to let go of the practice,
There is nothing more to attend to.
Awareness becomes spacious,
Soft,
Quiet.
The shelter remains,
Even as attention drifts.
And if sleep comes,
Let it come.
If awareness remains,
That's fine too.
The rain continues,
Thunder rolls and passes.
You are sheltered,
You are held,
You are allowed to rest.
