Welcome to Self-Compassion for Hard Moments.
This short practice will help you to slow down and relate to yourself with a little more kindness,
Especially in moments that feel heavy or overwhelming.
Start by taking a slow breath in and a long breath out.
Make yourself comfortable,
Whether you're seated or lying down.
And then,
Just begin to notice how you're feeling physically and mentally at the start of this practice.
Nothing to change,
Just notice.
To practice self-compassion means to practice mindfulness,
To accept common humanity,
And to practice and extend kindness towards yourself.
Start by acknowledging a moment of suffering.
Maybe you're experiencing that right now,
Or maybe something heavy you've been carrying is on your mind.
And can you simply acknowledge this is hard right now?
As that suffering comes to mind,
Can you notice where you feel it in your body?
And just be present with that feeling,
Allowing it to be without pushing it away,
Without minimizing it.
This is a moment of suffering.
This is hard right now.
And now take a moment to acknowledge your common humanity,
Meaning that suffering is shared by the rest of humanity.
It's a universal experience.
You are not alone in feeling suffering.
Gently remind yourself that you are not alone in feeling this way.
Other people struggle too and suffer.
As you notice the common humanity of suffering,
Pay attention to your body.
Does your body soften knowing that you are not alone?
And wherever it is you're feeling this suffering in your body,
Place a hand.
See if you can offer yourself a few kind words.
It's okay to feel this way.
I'm doing the best that I can right now.
I wish for happiness and peace for myself.
Again,
Noticing how your body feels as you invite in soothing touch and kind words.
Take another slow breath.
Bring your attention back to your whole body,
Head to toe.
Feeling your breath enter through your nose,
Fill up your body.
Slow exhale,
Letting it go.
Notice how you're feeling at the end of this meditation.
Perhaps you notice a small shift in your energy,
Your mood,
Your thoughts.
Perhaps there was a part of you not ready to embrace self-compassion,
And that's okay too.
Just notice that,
Be mindful of it,
And thank yourself for setting this time apart,
Continuing to come back to this practice whenever you need it.
May you be happy and free from suffering.
