Bye friends.
When we're relaxing,
Is that the same as meditating?
And when we're meditating,
Is it always relaxing?
Are they the same thing?
Not exactly,
But they can be related and understanding how they're the same or different can really help us get the most out of both.
When we're relaxing,
It's about helping our bodies and our minds recover.
So think about taking a nap or sitting in a nice bath.
Or maybe watching our favorite TV show.
What happens?
Our breathing slows down,
Our muscles relax.
And we begin to unwind.
And in our busy lives,
This incredibly valuable.
Meditation can be different.
Meditation can be relaxing,
But it also usually asks something different of us.
It asks for our attention.
For our attention,
We might follow our breath or use a mantra.
We might create a scene with our creativity.
Or just notice our own bodies.
It's about attention,
Usually.
And that's why it's so difficult to meditate when we're lying in bed about to fall asleep.
Because when our attention wanders.
.
.
You know,
Usually we just fall asleep.
And that might be totally fine if that's what we're looking for.
So just like we can choose.
The right TV show for the mood we're in.
We can choose the right type of meditation for what we're looking for.
We might just want to relax.
And as an example,
There are so many really great meditations,
Guided meditations here on Insight Timer that will help us relax.
Maybe even help us fall asleep.
But if we're looking for something else,
We choose that,
Something that perhaps asks for our attention.
That allows us to Deepen our awareness.
Perhaps be more focused.
And so,
Which one is best?
Well,
Come on.
They're just different tools for different reasons,
Right?
So it depends on what we're looking for.
And understanding the differences can help us get exactly what we're looking for.
Sometimes what we need most is rest.
And sometimes what we're looking for is a deeper or expanded awareness.
And sometimes we get both.
So thanks for listening.
Best of luck and joy on your journey,
And I'll see you next time.
