Hi,

I'm Scott Schuett.

I lead our mindfulness and compassion programs here at LinkedIn.

Today we're going to talk about a simple technique we can use when we're feeling frustrated or overwhelmed.

Life can be challenging,

And there are times when we get triggered.

In that moment,

It's hard to think clearly.

We want to do the right thing,

But it can be so difficult.

When we become aware that we're triggered,

There's a simple technique we can use called stop.

The S is for stop,

Literally,

Just stop.

We curb that impulse to react in a way that we might later regret and instead try to be fully present.

T is for take a breath.

Taking a few simple deep breaths activates our parasympathetic nervous system,

The opposite of the fight or flight system,

And can help us find a bit of clarity in that chaos.

O is for observe.

We can be an observer to our own thoughts and impulses.

We can become aware of what's happening internally.

Maybe we acknowledge to ourselves,

Whoa,

I'm getting really upset here.

What's that about?

And when we're ready,

P is for proceed.

As we become less reactive,

The way forward will become clearer.

We can use this in all parts of our life,

And with practice,

We can learn to do this very quickly.

So if you find yourself getting triggered or frustrated,

Remember,

Just stop.
